Blunt speaking 3:32pm on 11 Jun 2009 Nice to see standards and levels of decency are being upheld at the BBC. After the surprise of hearing "bullshit" on my TV at lunchtime, I'm glad to see there is no attempt to mask the word on your blog either. Censorship is a load of bullshit, of course. Can we now expect to read reports describing how "shit" certain policies are? Perhaps how MSPs are "talking a load of pish"?
The scunner factor 5:47pm on 08 Jun 2009 What on earth do Labour have to do to get Glasgow to stop voting for them? It feels as if I live in the only city in the UK that doesn't understand that Labour are no longer the party of the working classes. It really does beggar belief - I think there's more chance of the SNP winning the popular vote in London than in Glasgow!

On a similar note: "Not sure I entirely buy the SNP argument that this was a confidence vote in the Scottish Government. It was more about protest against Labour." Brian, when are you going to stop being so partisan? Can you not just accept that the people are refusing to adhere to the agenda set by the media for once?

I actually know of SNP supporters who voted UKIP because their main concern for this election was to get away from Europe, which is not one of the SNP's policies. I've also heard a lot of people wonder what the point is of voting SNP in these elections, seeing them more as a party for the Scottish Elections. Against this background, I was actually pleasantly surprised they managed to increase their vote so much. 10% increase Brian - that's too big for a protest vote.
Scottish Euro elections 5:30pm on 08 Jun 2009 I don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet, but the paltry number of seats we have just shows what rubbish the idea is that Scotland has more influence as part of the UK than it would on its own.

Luxembourg (population about 490,000) has 6 MEPs, the same as Scotland (population about 5.14 million). Conversely, countries with similar populations to Scotland (Finland, Denmark and Slovakia, populations 5.2 million, 5.3 million and 5.4 million respectively) have a whopping 14 MEPs. Joining the EU as an independent country would then mean a rejigging of the numbers to keep the total MEPs around the 736 mark of course, but we would end up with at least twice the current number. Naturally, unionists argue that Scotland has a bigger say as part of the UK, but that would only be true if the UK MEPs acted as one unit, which is nonsense as they act as parts of their differing European Parliament party groupings. Even if it was true, it still means Scottish voices being filtered through UK-wide opinions, rather than going directly to Strasbourg.

A new format war? 10:06am on 28 Apr 2009 The Blu-ray brigade point to the fact that Blu-ray disc sales have doubled in the last year but the adoption of the technology is not at the same speed as DVD.

There is a feeling from some quarters that Blu-ray is an interim technology that is merely bridging the physical format and the digital delivery of content over the net.

I don't think it's even anything to do with Blu-Ray being perceived as an interim technology. I think it's more that people think DVDs are good enough for their needs, and having just amassed a library of films on DVD (possibly rebuying ones they had on VHS), there's no justification for switching to Blu-Ray just so you get a slightly better picture. You can go into a shop and get a decent film for as little as £3 in a sale these days; conversely, foreign film buffs like myself stand no chance of finding what they want on Blu-Ray, giving even less reason to switch.

People can't afford to go switching formats any quicker than once every 10-15 years, even if the desire is there (which it isn't.)
