The fallout from Setanta's collapse 11:16pm on 23 Jun 2009 I can't get a satellite dish attached to my house, and I'm not in a cable area, so I appreciated what Setanta offered to Freeview viewers (sadly only Setanta 1, but it was better than nothing at all).

Hopefully ESPN will find its way on to Freeview, or Sky might finally get their pay-for Freeview package sorted, but in the meantime the only live football I'll see on tv will be the occasional international, Europa League or Scottish League Cup/Scottish Cup match on the BBC or the Champions League (which I'm not that fussed about) on ITV or Europa League on Five. As I live in Scotland and STV are at odds with the ITV network, there are no England games or FA Cup Games. If it hadn't been for Setanta on Freeview I wouldn't have seen the FA Cup Final! (and I have watched football on the web, like this year's Irish Cup Final (and thank for for that BBC, much appreciated) but it's simply better to watch in in a tv).

So...dear broadcasters, please remember that those of us with no satellite dish and no cable connection would like live sport, especially football, on terrestrial Freeview!
Democracy or bureaucracy? 1:47pm on 15 Dec 2008 It may have been deliberately provocative Brian, but your comment regarding nimbies with zero expertise but a finely honed sense of grievance who pursue their own agendas pretty much sums up the 129 inmates of Holyrood. Why do people believe that ‘more democracy’ is the answer to problems, when the democracy we have is a shambles thanks to grandstanding MSPs and party squabbling and in-fighting. They set a poor example which was spawned by Scottish local government, and will infect the health boards until they cease to function at all. Please – no directly elected boards, it will be the nail in the coffin of the Scottish NHS.

Sadly true Chico, it's long past time to get real to the fact that Scotland is a small nation that punched above its weight for years, then lost out when the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia broke up and Scandanavian nations improved - and became an even smaller fish in a bigger sea. As usual, the Fifa rankings are flattering to deceive!

I agree it's time for Burley to go for broke at Hampden, there is flair in this Scotland squad. A bit of grit at the back and in the middle, with some fancy dans out wide and up front, could see the Tartan Army crying tears of joy into their beer AFTER the match!
Bills, bills, bills 2:17pm on 03 Sep 2008 #20 Brigadierjohn. Unless you are an MSP, you aren't being asked to sanction anything. It will be MSPs in the Scottish Parliament who vote on this, unless it becomes an election issue next time around (and, given that this LIT is a lame duck, it might well be). Such is the problem with "representative democracy" - we vote them in, they then do all the voting thereafter.

A plea to the Scottish Government - please have the guts to call this a Scottish Income Tax rather than a Local Income Tax. If your intention, whether it gets off the ground or not, is to levy a flat 3p rate on everyone in Scotland, and you intend to collect it centrally, it is a Scottish Income Tax. Please don't try to mis-sell this, be honest, go one, you know it's buried deep in your soul...somewhere. I know why you don't want to though, you're afraid of the "Tartan Tax" jibes that will follow, so smoke and mirrors it is then.
