Insurance, not nationalisation 2:42pm on 22 Jan 2009 What about their off-balance sheets commitments, I think that's where the real problem lies.

Oh, and how about Mr Brown's as well. I think they were called PFI ?
More demands expected 12:53pm on 13 Oct 2008 Maybe what the government should do is ask for normal working people to volunteer to be representatives on these boards. As we are untainted by the troughing that seems to go on, normal people will be more able to say "The emperor has no clothes", rather than the very people who are selling the emperor his new outfit.
The next accident 1:16pm on 23 Sep 2008 I may be being naive but why dont the government put this money into the bottom of the tree.

Use the money to help homeowners to stay in their homes by nt paying the mortgage entirely, and taking ownership of the house.

As far as I can see there are 3 benefits

The homeowner has a roof over their head

The taxpayer has an asset that is at least worth something.

The money flows aroung the system and there is no longer any toxic debt, so the banks have no more concerns.

It also takes away the risk of the banks simply sucking up taxpayers money and asking for more, and also evicting people, who will be a drain on taxpayers in years to
come.
Who pays? 10:55am on 02 Sep 2008 I may be dim, but I dont understand.

Just a month or so ago, we were told that banks were going to insist on more equity when lending money. This was described by the Government as a return to prudent lending.

Yet a month later the Government is going to give people interest free loans to cover their deposits. This presumably means that if borrowers default, then the banks will get their cut first, and the taxpayer will end up with nothing.

Am I being stupid, or is this actually what Mr Brown is proposing ?
