Total and the Wimbledon effect 1:48pm on 02 Feb 2009 Surely the whole point of the free marget globalized economy is that this situation is exactly waht is supposed to happen.

Companies are free to operate where they like using the cheapest, most flexible workforce.

Funny how all the rent-a-quote commentators were quite happy when the free market economy was pushing up their property prices, giving them lots of cheap credit and cheap computers, ipods and holidays - but only now seem to see the downside.

There are many elephants in the room with this global economic crisis - and outsourcing to cheap labour markets is but one of them.

Now you seem to be using the slightly up figures from the markets this morning as a good sign. This is almost Daily Express journalism! When the FTSE is down, it doesn't matter, but when it's up - hey it's great!

Anyway, I acn only support most of the others - this isn't some massive nationalisation and return to government for the people over the corporates, it's merely a way of bailing out the corporates at the people's expense.

New symptoms are identified all the time.

This morning's actions are like an aspirin, easing the symptoms in the short term, but not curing them.

The illness will need to work it's way through, making the patient very weak in the process.
The next accident 11:04am on 23 Sep 2008 Imagine the worst road crash ever...every time you think its over another vehicle piles in...and all being played out frame by frame in a neverending nightmare.

Couldn't all the economic brains see that the whole point of the bubbles created by the free market is that they exist because there are no rules or regulations, hence they grow in a vacuum where everything and anything is possible, their oxygen is personal greed.....

This has been so obviously where they would end up that I'm amazed that everyone is so shocked.

Back to my car crash...each solution dreamed up in Washington, or in these blogs, is merely like offering water and help to the first cars in the crash, without doing anything to stop the mass of cars still crashing at the back....

The Tories are the opposition party, they can certainly set the agenda for debate around this issue and challenge the government. They won't, of course, because
a) the middle class, right wing tabloids are having too much fun making GB a hate figure
b) they would have to take a position. Iraq taught them not to do that.

So they'll just say nothing and push us further to the free markets if and when they get in.

The agenda here is the model, and the announcement by business leaders close to the Tories that they want LESS deregulation of the markets.
Credit-crunched Gordon Brown 11:25am on 22 Sep 2008 Slowly, inexorably, the re-alignment of the market model that I warned of last week is beginning. Anyone else note this news item from the BBC site:

"Business leaders have criticised the government over the economic crisis, saying Britain needs a "new direction".

The 11 heads say less regulation and more tightly controlled public spending would have left the UK better prepared.

The figures, most of whom have links to the Tories, were said to be expressing their personal views in the letter to the Financial Times."

Yep, it's the free market bucaneers waiting for the chance to go even further down that road. More deregulation??!! It beggars belief.

Trouble is that after a winter of hardship, they know that people are going to be concerned about their jobs, homes and pensions...and will probably nod through anything that looks like bringing short term relief.

I think it's time that the Tories tols us all exactly what they intend to do.
The American way to fail 1:40pm on 19 Sep 2008 We will be saddled with debt for generations and will fall back in real terms.

The future growth for the plutocrats in UK and US is not the hoime markets but the foreign markets. London's postion as some kind of epicentre for the world's financial services industry was never going to last.

What we have to watch is what kind of laws / regulations / cutbacks they make on us. Pretty soon people are going to be so scared about the houses, jobs and pensions that they will accept anything o0ffered if it looks like stabilising the situation.
The American way to fail 1:28pm on 19 Sep 2008 Guys, I think it's magnificent the way you are debating and analysign what's going on.

The trouble is that it's all political. The great champions of the free market model really have absolutely no idea what to do.

They are throwing money at it to go away, but when other gpovernments over the last 30 years have wanted to do this, the US and IMF have said 'NO'. The markets have to sort themselves out leaving the weak, the reckless and the unsustainable to go to the wall.

Why can't they do this here? Because of the US elections, and because we have a weak, directionless government who don't understand the system.

The 2 big western economies sold their soul to the financial services industry and don't know how to get it back.

They can't of course, but in trying to do so they will pile up debts that will weigh us down for generations.

There is no easy way out, but all that is happening at the moment is that oil is being poured on the flames, and the fire's gonna get a whole lot worse.

You're not wrong, you haven't gone far enough.

Anyone who hasn't read through a copy of 'Shock Doctrine' should do...this is the shock building and building till everyone supinely accepts the therapy of the new world order to save their homes, jobs and pensions.

Then the true level of economic and social inequality and immobility will begin to explode...
