What could/would/should central banks have done? 3:17pm on 23 Sep 2009 Casino Bankers decided as a POLICY to buy worthless bundles of US sub prime mortgages which their co-fantasists had rated Triple A.
Pray tell me how they are not culpable?

Had they retained the services of and listened to advice from those senior managers over the age of 50, people who understood Loan to Value, Ability to Repay and the effects of a Recession well maybe we could have avoided the crash.

Of course the speculators would have made a lot less in bonuses, hence the dismissal of the older guys and the Lemming like rush to disaster. Unfortunately, the system doesn't penalise the crazies, they stay rich and millions of ordinary people suffer.

Surely it cannot be beyond the wit of World Finance Ministers to prevent a repeat, or can it?

Crowd trouble club-by-club 3:16pm on 26 Aug 2009 The last time I saw any significant trouble at a match was the last time Milwall visited Maine Road several years ago (maybe 10 years). Prior to that I saw a horrendous running fight between West Ham and Spurs fans in about 1982.
I've had a Season Ticket at Maine Road/Eastlands for many years and as a North East resident have also been to many games at Newcastle and Sunderland as a neutral and have been to many grounds nationwide as an away fan.
There is very little violence to be seen at grounds thankfully, it's away from the action that organised scum attached to a few clubs indulge in their thuggery. Unfortunately, Millwall can't shake off their sadistic fringe supporters.
Manchester City making waves 6:16pm on 24 Aug 2009 None of these 'Big 4' posters have a clue about the feelings of long suffering Blues like me. We're still totally bemused by events.
However, money talks in football, Man U paid £45,000 for Albert Quixall to set a British record about 50 years ago and they haven't stopped spending since.
Nevertheless SAF is the most successful manager in history, now if he would only grow up and start speaking to the Beeb again, stop criticising refs. and give credit to opponents we could all RESPECT his fantastic achievements.

I hope that Sparky is our manager in 10 years time in which case we'll have some silverware to show for his tenure.

There is massive overstaffing in Local Government, Universities and at junior management and administrative level level in the NHS and there are more MOD civilians than Armed Service Personnel. There are too many Quangos and Watchdogs...........need I go on?

He can start with the unelected Regional Assemblies so emphatically rejected by ballot here in the North East yet undemocratically imposed by NuLab anyway. Oh yes, and Business Link, stuffed with early retired junior Bank managers and ex public sector nobodies most of whom are on index linked pensions and need to fill their empty days.

He needn't stop there, middle management in Health, Education, Defence and Local Government is massively overstaffed.
Owen worth Man Utd gamble 10:32am on 03 Jul 2009 Owen was a superb striker when he had PACE, he's now much slower over the turf and crucially in reacting to the ball in front of him.

He missed some SITTERS for the Mags (including 2 one-on-ones in the run in), had he converted a couple of them they would have stayed up.

He no longer hacks it against top defenders.

Get real people, it's been about little other than money since Jack Walker bought Blackburn's title.

I've been a City fan since Don Revie was centre forward, these are the most exciting times since our purple patch in the late 60s early 70s.
So it's our turn again, leave off the childish resentment.
Charities and politics 1:51pm on 08 Apr 2009 I think the lack of comment here shows exactly why it's wrong to fund political lobbying in the charitable sector.

The public are broadly quite generous with most charities but pay little attention to the specifics.

by definition most charities are single issue lobbyists and governments of any persuasion will inevitably back the vote winning causes.

I volunteer for several charities both local and national, of these the most needy and most difficult to promote is in the area of Mental Health, a massively underfunded sector which is never going to be electorally 'sexy'. The proportion of political funding coming our way is derisory.
