Shouldn't banks work for us? 1:58pm on 01 Dec 2009 Perhaps you'd explain why in the 7 years before he successfully navigated Lehmann onto the rock the CEO trousered nearly $0.5bn in salary etc and yet none of that will come back ?
Then perhaps you'd explain why banks had
a) capital ratio's far in excess of Basle agreements
b) why huge assets were held off balalnce sheet when they were still owned by the banks
c) why it was felt that high risk assets could be made low risk by mixing them with other low risk assets?
d) no not one regulator said or did anything to stop them ?

Then perhaps we'd get a banking system that supports the real economy and the casino banks can do their thing - and carry the can if it goes wrong ..

.. if you want to win you have to make sure the armed forces have the weapons to do the job
If you don't put in the money and the weapons then don't do it
What it seems to me is that we don't want to pay or provide the weapons - and our forces are dying because of that
In the 1914-18 war , 60,000 were injured or killed on the first day of the Somme but society has changed and won't accept continued deaths when yhey don't understand way
What was the phrase ? "a far off land about the lives of whose people we know nothing"

Well if you want my support then explain it - and if you can't then get the troops out becausze they are dying for nothing
It won't be March 09:01am on 12 Nov 2009 I'm so pleased that Gordon Brown and David Cameron had such a good PMQ's - its so nice to see them getting involved and not solving the problems we have a country - a cynical observer might have thought they were more worried about scoring points off each other than actually sorting things out
Seriously, what does PMQ's actually solve or help ? It might have once been used to hold the PM to account but not any more - so why bother ?
Brown has bogged up the country and I don't need Cameron to point that out - and I don't know if Cameron could fix it without an ocean of grief - some choice come next year ..!

Illegal wars and missed opportunities for public sector reform, and he is neither a moral man or a successful one - why would the EU want him?

'Labour's lost it,' says the Sun 11:18am on 30 Sep 2009 As i read it the speech yesterday had two new policies and about half of them were restatements of existing policy or previously announced stuff
- so no change there ..

If the Sun has gone for the Tories then it will ensure lots of adverse comment and that may swing a few voters but frankly there is enough evidence to bury Labour already.

I saw little evidence of details on tackling the deficit which he helped make worse than it could have been - sorry, he and the Labour party just are not credible on the economy. Cameron may have called it wrong on the stimulus but don;t forget its the matter of 1% or so because as the recession bit benefits went up anyway with unemployment so these are not discretionary

His wife loves him - he'll need that after he is ejected kicking and screaming from No.10 and heads for a grumpy few years on the back benches
The Obama and Gordon card 09:59am on 25 Sep 2009 Post 8 said it all really - Brown had his chance and blew it and quite frankly few people are listening any more.

He has a track record that is quite frankly rubbish and we will be paying for the imbalance in public spending for a generation - which may force us to withdraw from the world stage.

Countries have interests and the demographics in the US mean that their emphasis is shifting away from the UK towards the Pacific and Far East
If we have common cause then I'm sure they would appreciate working with us - just as the US works with anyone else who also has common cause with them.

But just to suppose that the UK is special bacause of past history is to ignore that times are changing and we are NOT a dominant militray power, an economic power house or a huge influence in Europe - when you look at it like that the US would have little reason to treat us as 'special' - a good friend maybe ..
