An apology, an architect and an 'audience with Parky' 04:19am on 26 Nov 2009 Pete, I can understand your anger when you read posts such as those by Nomea but your reactions only reinforce the 'Chip on the Shoulder' mentality that people are tarring you with.

You seem to be under the impression that a substantial number of Australians don't regard Australia as a separate country, and you'd like to see that change through the formation of a republic. Did I get that right?

Firstly, I have to agree with GaffaOz, in two years I've not met any who don't see Australia as a country, even those who came over pre 1980 and are dual citizens. In addition, that's certainly not a viewpoint that many Brits have either. As far as they're concerned, you're an English speaking nation that's a long way away (just like the USA). But here's the weird thing, even if Austrlians did feel that way, then surely that's their entitlement, and if they choose to reject a reuplic then that also is up to them.

As an independent nation, I don't really see how you can blame an other country for your woes (and here I'm making the massive assumption that you are not an aboriginal Australian).

In the interests of reducing my ignorance (I am not being sarcastic) can you elaborate on this statement:

Thirsting for gold 05:03am on 25 Nov 2009 Fair enough Pete, I suppose every property boom is percevied to start somewhere and if people were desperate to be near to the Olympic action, or in an area that benefited from new infrastructure, then that would make a good reason.

Overall though, for a boom to happen there has to be an increase in the availability of money in the housing market (be it real, on the back of a mineral boom for example) or virtual (in the form of unwise lending by banks). I don't think the Olympics was responsible for that, except in a relatively small number of cases.

You're surely right though that Queensland's infrastrucutre is creeking at the edges in certain areas (though in others it works surprisingly well).

Personally, I find myself falling between the two camps above. On the one hand, I'd never want to be deterred from being good at something just because the odds are against it, and for suceeding in this way I have much admiration for Australia.
On the other hand, I wouldn't want to see money being channelled purely at those who will bring home the medals (the East Germany effect, as described above). There's surely no value to Australia if that is what is happening.

While it's true that UK media (other than TV) is celebrity obsessed, probably to a greater extent than here in Australia, I think Nick was looking at the relative importance that international celebrities are given here and whether that importance is now overdone given that Australia is now not that much of an effort to visit.

The Republican Referendum: Ten Years On 9:45pm on 10 Nov 2009 Pete, I can assure I don't work for Auntie, I haven't even paid Nick's wages these last two years. I agree with you that if a moderator has gone to the trouble to remove your posts, they could at least send an email saying which rule you broke (and maybe even whether the removal was recommended by another poster).

I stand by my earlier statement though. I would have thought that visiting the ANWM was a pretty good starting point in 'looking for myself' with respect to this subject.
