Rhetoric of reassurance 10:43am on 02 Dec 2009 We could look at the forthcoming events from a brighter side. Perhaps as an announcement of a new Woodstock? Anyhow, escalating war is a dread, no matter how much a new wave of liberalism, a cultural revolution, is needed desparately.

The Continentals are surely in the same mood, as you are, if someone mention the idea of being united with the British.

I was only trying to put together some facts about present situation with EU, and your's not mine taking out of the context is a matter for a joke (or even deeper phychological analysis?).

Isn't it true that EU is a product of 27 wishes to be united? The name speaks for itself - European Union. Not simply the organisation of europeans, or the united europeans. If so, the best possible form of such an union is constitution. Constitution is the best possible mean of protecting the democratic rights of ordinary people, from such an organisation. If you don't want a constitution, please don't wish the union!

Regarding your's mentioning that the British historically "reject the idea of a written constitution", I can only laugh to your naivety. Constitutions, as well as laws and other necessities, become "unwritten" when the people get used to them. Various and many Peisistratos from the history would have certanly wandered around without their mazes, among so many naturally-born with the constitution.

In the former USSR the answer for all the headaches would be: let's put this matter to discussion. It has been the important prejudice of the system. Solutions could allegedly emerge at the meetings, in the environments of shared or, better to say, nobody's responsibility. That is also the picture, in my opinion, of today's situation with the EU.

I don't think the constitution and any amendment should be a collective work. At least the history of democracy, begining with Solon's constitution of Athens, has proven the opposite. (Worth of mention is the lack of one Peisistratos in EU, which usually comes in pair with Solon.)

If there has been no intelectual capacity in EU for stating a simple and acceptable constitution, then it would have been better to abandon further supporting and maintaning that sluggish and, as far as democracy is concerned, potentially dangerous mastodon.

So your's saying is let's go back to the basic level of unification. All those wishes for having a competitive and powerful umbrella were just dreams. Who the hell wants the EU!

I don't see what could be better for organizing a large number of individuals, even larger than it is now in their national borders, but the democratic constitution. All else, like the present situation with EU, is worse, undemocratic. - Whether or no having democracy within particular national or rural borders.
Lisbon: A Pandora's box 11:37am on 21 Jun 2009 The logical step forward, in the process of EU unification, is to agree the constitution. What is EU without constitution? The same as any country before the constitution, unconstituted. The same as WTO, UN, etc. Just a common market, not enough that one could say in satisfaction of it's ordinary people.

It is true the EU has been functioning also well without constitution. But that is exactly the situation, which some would have liked to see as a fortress against the danger of constitution, which moves the politicians closer to being out of hands. On the basis of which document, or unwritten agreement, is EU functioning today? That is the former USSR situation, to keep functioning, until it last, on the basis of some superfluous protocols, with plenty of room for various misinterpretations.

The constitution is the only mean which would secure the democracy in the EU, freedom of each particular individuum in the EU. The problem is only of intelectual nature, of finding and recognizing the reason, also right people.
Lisbon: A Pandora's box 12:18pm on 19 Jun 2009 The fact we have been witnessed for years is there has been no guts among EU rulers to move a little bit further towards better. We can clearly see their effectiveness. EU is even today, after many years of hard work, still not more than a common market. All those wishes, for being a respectable competitor among the forces that rule our planet, for securing the future, etc., have disappeared before the necessity of constituting, to move a logical step forward.

The only problem of EU is, apparently, of intelectual nature. We could only hope the basic reasons for getting united are not forgotten by it's rulers.
French rebel with a cause 2:58pm on 12 May 2009 There is an evident cause for discussing the political system. It is called the global finantial crisis. But is it really an another option in existence? Is it really just a matter of choice between capitalism and communism? I would rather say we are using an obsolete terminology.

If it were the matter of simplification, it would be more plausible to choose between democracy and tyranny, like in the good old times. The political system of tyranny in the classical period was not considered in so negative context like it has been recently, but it could be again. One never knows.

Therefore, I would rather strive for observing the concrete causes of the crisis, leaving the prejudices behind. It has to be something wrong with the communism, for sure, otherwise there would not be so many malcontents, and perhaps former USSR would stand much longer than 70 years. The modern French communists should ask them how it was being to live under that option.

No doubt it is something wrong with the global financial system as well, but that's not why the answer should be looked for in the books of Marx. What was exactly Marx doing in England, was he grasped properly or wrongly, it is gone with the wind of history.
Germans want dose of discipline 1:44pm on 19 Mar 2009 I agree with Paul Krugman that "poor leadership" is playing part in EU today. The EU is whether or no still an imposed state, operating without a constitution. Prolonged ratifications, referendums, and other mechanisms for merciless protecting national interests, are apparantly not without consequences. As a consequence, where it comes to share the difficulties, there is obviously no effective leadership to lean on. We truly have one common body, a central committee, built no more no less for constructive discussions. Perhaps another example of the resemblance to the former communist states.

Isn't it now high time to put an end to the endless story about constitution, to exempt the troublemakers, to cut the Gordian knot of solicitors' ruses? To finally take an oath, before any further actions.

Who in fact "is still struggling with its communist spectres"? Those experienced or those unexperienced? What was not envisaged by Karl Marx, surely, was the victory of his idea in a state like Russia. He was thinking, in fact, about higly developed industrial states. Was he right after all?
EU at crossroads: Turn left? 1:28pm on 18 Mar 2009 What is common to Communism and Fascism is a reverse order of values. That is basics, which should not be forgotten, when we are trying to reply to: are they right? There was no elite, but mediocrity, at the power of the nazy and communist states. The true elite, as we have learned from history, is then deprived of state. They flee if they can. Such states are a paradise for mediocrity.

Some of us would like to see Socialism somewhere between, not as bad as Communism. But there is still a danger of getting incompetent rulers. Who can guarantee their goal could not eventually transform to Utopia, Communism? If they are not competent rulers, as far as economy is concerned, they are still not in danger of loosing their positions. It is easy also in Socialism for similar representatives of so called opressed masses, to emerge and grab the power. In fact, for economy to become a secondary problem. I think we should ask for opinion all those newcomers from the former communist states. How well their markets were planned during those former days?

And similarities? It is enough to observe a little the huge Bruxelles bureaucracy. Why it is so difficult to find the differences from the former USSR?
