Why so serious? 1:53pm on 31 Aug 2008 “Some men aren’t looking for anything logical. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”

For almost all of us that have seen ‘The Dark Knight’, these lines are burned into immortality. They encapsulate the essential battle that exists between Batman and The Joker, as well as the internal struggle that burns inside Bruce Wayne. Thus giving rise to his alter ego.

On reflection they raise a much deeper argument on the status of our own lives. Is this really the case? Do some people have a predilection for violence, or chaos, or general all round malevolence? Are some among us destined to commit atrocities, just as there may be some of us destined to achieve greatness?

It’s a very convenient argument for some. Yes, we are all born evil and all that. There is no helping some of us. We just want to be bad, and, by hook or by crook, bad we shall be. Nah, I don’t buy it myself. It’s just that – too convenient. This argument lacks an appreciation of the world in which we live, a tough, often cruel environment that stretches the limits of our consciousness and our own internal conflict, a world that challenges us everyday, and examines us, often under the most trying of circumstances.

Now, in this environment we are faced with a choice. How that choice becomes manifest has so much to do with the environment in which we find ourselves, but also our own desire to make one decision rather than another.

For The Joker, he was never able to recover from the brutality of his father (if you believe that particular story) and so set upon a course of cathartic chaos. This story has been played out in many a life. Cause and consequence, rather than being impervious to it, we are shaped by it. We respond in a myriad of reactions that are all too human…and hey, why shouldn’t they be, we are after all human.

So, some want to watch the world burn, and others want to see it flourish.

Right, but “what would you have me do?” Well… “Endure, Master Wayne.”

It’s not really that easy is it? If it were, the world would be a place without conflict. Endurance, put in the simplest of terms, is the ability to continue over long, exhausting periods. To do this a series of steps needs to occur one after the other…oh, and for a really, really long time! But to endure that is what we must do.

Telling tales 1:51pm on 31 Aug 2008 I’ve always been intrigued by the origins of things. From whence did they originate? How did they come about? What gave rise to it being done so, rather than not? Now, one can read about the origins of almost anything; man, earth, the side parting. You can do so by using THE great modern invention of our time – the web. Or the old fashioned way, by reading a book. Here you will find a myriad of different theories, put forward by an equally dazzling list of authors claiming to have THE definitive solution. Equally, and perhaps more satisfying, there are events that have occurred that cannot be fundamentally explained, or if they can, certainly not in a way that allows my mind to picture the event. Take, for example, the Moai statues of Easter Island. Now various theories place the creation of these statues at differing periods separated by centuries. What they all agree on is, they were created using stone not indigenous to the island. And certainly not a stone that was transportable by any known means. Which begs the question, “How did they get there?” My mind can’t even fathom such an event occuring…well, actually I can, but to realise it, one would require a Dreamworks production budget and most would then just argue that it was far fetched. Similarly, my mind and imagination hit a vacuum like wall when challenged to imagine what time must have been like prior to what many like to call The Big Bang. This is my favourite description of The Big Bang, “a cosmological model of the universe that is best supported by all lines of scientific evidence and observation. The essential idea is that the universe has expanded from a primordial hot and dense initial condition at some finite time in the past and continues to expand to this day.” Come again? I don’t get it. First I don’t get how something is growing at an infinite level. What exists on the other side of infinity? It’s growing, right? Well, what’s it growing into? A big space? A big empty space that drops as deep as it ascends high? An ocean of nothingness that drops into an abyss of nada…? Exactly. I just can’t do it. Then, there is the issue of what existed before tick tick boom? Again, we’re told that, “the universe was filled homogeneously and isotropically with an incredibly high energy density, huge temperatures and pressures, and was very rapidly expanding and cooling. Approximately 10-35 seconds into the expansion, a phase transition caused a cosmic inflation, during which the universe grew exponentially. After inflation stopped, the universe consisted of a quark-gluon plasma, as well as all other elementary particles. Temperatures were so high that the random motions of particles were at relativistic speeds, and particle-antiparticle pairs of all kinds were being continuously created and destroyed in collisions. At some point an unknown reaction called baryogenesis violated the conservation of baryon number, leading to a very small excess of quarks and leptons over antiquarks and anti-leptons—of the order of 1 part in 30 million. This resulted in the predominance of matter over antimatter in the present universe.” Yes but antiquarks, antischmarks…what did the gaff look like? I mean just try and fathom it. Bearing in mind that nothing existed in this ‘infinite density’ you can’t start imagining swirls of clouds, or “C-beams shimmering in the dark at the Tannhouser Gate.” And that for me is the fundamental intrigue, letting the imagination run to a point so far removed from the shackles of time and space that no book or theory can actually paint the picture. It instead requires an experience of the event. The joy of unchartered territory is that no one can tell you you’re wrong…

The cost of art 3:35pm on 30 Aug 2008 Watching the Olympic games recently, I was truck by something;
1.) 29 new world records set.
Most of those seemed to occur in the swimming pool, where world records seem to fall with almost monotonous regularity. I mean, how do they do it. If they carry on at this rate they will be covering 1500 metres in the same time that it takes one to utter the words, “ready, set….and the winner is.” Michael Phelps, and Ian Thorpe before him, seemed to have been born with the express advantage of appearing to share the same characteristics of fish, and also the ability to swim faster than anyTHING before them. I mean Great Whites haven’t got shit on Phelps. This boy is quick. Now, lets take a moment to consider Usain Bolt. It’s probably fair to say that Bolt could probably outrun an Aston Martin. 9.69. These numbers should be etched into immortality…well, at least until he runs again and actually tries to run 100 yards rather than 75. His stride covers 8 feet. Poor old Richard Thompson (who was a distant second) covers a mortal 6 feet. So, actually Bolt only needs to maintain the same speed as his nearest rival and by sheer logistics will win by…well, you do the maths. But it’s a healthy margin. Two athletes, two men pre-conditioned 9 months before birth to be able to run faster, and swim faster than any before them. There undoubtedly will be others that go faster than either of these two magnificent athletes. But where will it end? Surely there exists a definitive speed beyond which the human body cannot exceed? Surely. If we carry on at this rate, and given that we still have roughly 4 billion years left before our sun burns out, and under the supposition that 100 metres will still be an Olympic event in, say, 27 million years time, with an additional supposition that we haven’t evolved to creatures with four legs, the 100 yard dash will be completed in say 3.5 seconds!! Outrageous, isn’t it? Well, yes and no. It all boils down to perspective. Have we reached, or are we nearing the apotheosis of human physical perfection? Are we approaching the point in which we, as we have evolved thus far, cannot go any farther? I guess the London Olympics will tell us a lot. Four years might be a blink when talking about human evolution, but it certainly will show us a little the evolution of Mssrs Bolt and Phelps. It goes beyond merely sport, the whole issue of our own opportunity to tread new ground, explore new territory applies to us all. David Bowie had it right, “We can be heroes…just for one day.”
