Benitez's brinkmanship strikes again 09:25am on 26 Oct 2009 Dull stuff first:

1. Man Utd sharing Ferguson's usual berating of the referee whenever the game goes against his team.

2. Bloggers having a pop at Phil for writing about or being biased about Liverpool. It was clearly the biggest game of the weekend and Liverpool won. Quite an appropriate choice and tone for a blog, I'd say.

Either way, both points very tedious. The true football fans - and there are many decent Man Utd fans on here doing this - will accept that Liverpool deserved to win the game.

It's not the defining point in Liverpool's season and cannot mask the flaws and weaknesses in the squad, but it does give hope and confidence that the season isn't over yet - and what a season it's shaping to be for the PL.

Final point: Fernando Torres was the only person on the pitch that could have scored that goal. The boy is simply lethal.
Capello's World Cup contenders 09:20am on 15 Oct 2009 It's far too early to make judgement calls on a probably half of the squad - the rest of the season will sort the wheat from the chaff.

It's pure speculation as to whether or not the long-term absentees, like Hargreaves, Cole, Downing etc. will be able to come back and play as well as they did. Only time will tell and we'll have a better idea in the new year. Would love to see Joe Cole firing again though, but only for England, not Chelsea! ;-)

As for Beckham, I think he's a must - as is Crouch. You always need a Plan B and these two provide it, often in tandem.

No Owen though, although that may change if he starts scoring regularly for Utd. It could be argued that with Theo Walcott able to play up top and poach goals, we only need to take four 'strikers' (Heskey, Rooney, Defoe, Crouch).
Chelsea & Liverpool under scrutiny 10:30am on 02 Oct 2009 Mascherano is hugely important to Liverpool, as was proven against Fiorentina. When his is on top form, he is immense at protecting the back four.

While he's not been at his best this season, he's still far better than the alternatives. His name on the teamsheet will give confidence to the defence while allowing Gerrard the freedom to get forward and support Torres.

Vital, for me, that Mascherano plays - even if he is off his game at the moment.
Chelsea & Liverpool under scrutiny 09:22am on 02 Oct 2009 The use of Aurelio as the holding playing in front of the back four against Fiorentina was quite baffling and clearly didn't work. He was completely anonymous and the defence was exposed.

This highlights the much-discussed lack of depth Liverpool currently posses, but it also exposed a more concerning fragility in the back four - particularly in the centre. Over the past few years, the defence has been the one consistent strength of the team (along with Gerrard's reptitive brilliance).

Re-signing Agger was crucial, if only for a genuine competition for places. Something is not right at the back and if anyone is likely to expose it, Drogba et al are very realistic candidates.

That said, Liverpool are dangerous with backs against the wall and can never be written off. So regardless of everything I've just said about a shakey defence and no strength in depth, I'm going for a Torres goal in a 1-0 Liverpool win! Fingers crossed!
Giggs is Manchester United's shining knight 2:36pm on 27 Sep 2009 I think it is still very early to judge Nani. At the moment, he is not performing well, however he is still very young and inexperienced.

Consider this: From what I've seen, he carries the ball too long, tries to go alone to often, is guilty of overplaying and looking for the glory goal/ball, and is more style than substance.

Does that remind you of any other young Portugese player at the start of his United career?

I'm not for one second suggesting that Nani will develop into the player Ronaldo has become, but it's worth giving him more time to find out.

Of course, as a Liverpool fan I'm desperately hoping what we're seeing now is all we're going to see from him!

Accusations of bias, unprofessionalism and poor journalism? Ridiculous. Some people need to get a grip on life (or rather get a life!). I'd love to know what qualifies people to say something is 'poor journalism' when the sum total of their journalistic experience is probably reading The Sun once a week.

It's a blog on an interesting subject and a player worthy of interest. Get over it!
Giggs is Manchester United's shining knight 11:02am on 27 Sep 2009 As a Liverpool fan, I make no apologies for stating that in my opinion Ryan Giggs deserves all the plaudits that come his way.

The dedictation and, crucially, hunger to continue to train as hard as he must have to in order to continue playing in the Premier League must be applauded, for starters.

Secondly, the way he has adapted his game as his pace has gradually left him must be acknowledged. The clear difference in the way he and Nani play the game is that Giggs uses his brain. Those looking to downplay the effect he had on the game by saying he only played a couple of simple balls are missing the point; it's because he played a couple of simple balls that United scored twice.

Most of all, I am impressed with his diplomacy. In an age of constant showboating (on and off the pitch) and one-upmanship, Giggs has continued to carry himself with dignity.

He's a great professional.
Benitez relishes vital victory 09:24am on 02 Feb 2009 To me, football is about momentum. As a team game, spirit and confidence is everything; just look at how teams go on runs of victories and then inexplicitly can't win for weeks on end.

Liverpool's victory has given them, I hope, belief and confidence. The test now is whether or not they can resist squandering it all with a lacklustre performance against Portsmouth.

As for the game, Liverpool dominated throughout. Any Chelsea fans claiming the sending off robbed them of the game are fooling themselves. Harsh, yes. Game-defining? Hardly.
Liverpool send out title message 09:19am on 27 Oct 2008 As a Liverpool fan, here is my take:

1. Liverpool have just done what no other Premiership team has done for four years - beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This is a feat worthy of excitement and celebration. It is also a compliment to Chelsea and deserves acknowledgement from Manchester Utd and Arsenal supporters.

2. Although it is far too early to talk about the title, and I don't think many genuine Liverpool fans are, it is encouraging and exciting to know that there's a chance - albeit a slim one at this stage. By this stage of the season, Liverpool fans have normally had a reality check - this year at the very worst this reality check has been postponed. And who knows, maybe indefinitely.

3. One other point to a previous poster: Alonso controlled the game so well because Mascherano provided him with the protection he needed. The boy is class.

The big danger now, as many have said, is getting up for the 'lesser' teams who will put 10 men behind the ball at Anfield.

Whatever happens, yesterday's result has breathed life into the season.
Liverpool facing test of strength 12:40pm on 24 Oct 2008 The scene is set for Sunday's game to be a great spectacular - if not spectacularly great!

Liverpool have the confidence to take on Chelsea and the steel to not panic if they go a goal behind.

Both teams would probably settle for a draw, which given recent history has got to be the most likely result.

There is, though, a danger that too much emphasis will be placed on the result. If Liverpool win, it will still be far too early to name them as serious contenders; similarly if they lose they will not be out of the race.

If nothing else, Sunday's game should be exciting a highly competitive. Can't wait!
