Coal scrubs up 8:14pm on 01 May 2009 Just a quick comment on #6. The feasibility of storing CO2 in depleted oil wells is dubious. The plan is to use depleted natural gas reservoirs or saline aquifers which are bigger and more suited to storage. Enhanced Oil Recovery is currently done without the need for excess CO2 from power stations.
Coal scrubs up 2:03pm on 01 May 2009 The key thing to understand in this debate is that there are multiple solutions and none of them are easy. The use of CCS if implemented would only reduce carbon emissions by 19% (IEA estimates) and Renewable power can't realistically answer all of the UK's energy requirements.

I feel that we run the risk of choosing pet projects at the expense of others. Effective prioritization of resources is required.

40% of carbon emissions come from the domestic sector and we are still doing very little to change our behaviour by decreasing our energy use. Thats doing, not talking about doing. (oh and don't reply talking about energy efficiency measures - read up on the Khazzoum Brooke theory of energy efficiency first please and why energy efficiency doesn't lead to the savings that one might expect.)

There has to be a balanced approach to energy in the UK - CCS has its place but so does increased use of energy storage technologies, like large scale battery technology, to smooth out the intermittency of RE. That answer is available and working now. Energy Storage solutions/cofiring of domestic waste in power stations with scrubbing technology/biogas/reduced use of fossil fuels - all these are ways to reduce carbon emissions available now and starved of investment.

CCS is a viable solution but while it is being developed millions of tons of CO2 will be emitted from CCS ready power stations that are waiting for CCS to be ready.
It might not be you 5:57pm on 23 Feb 2009 Reports like these really hack me off. We should be please that some people are better off when the ones who are worse off are MUCH worse off. If I hear another report about ASDA creating 5000 new jobs I will scream. These jobs are offered at near to minimum wage and bring no new skill to the economy.

Britain's unemployment is structural and the recession will be harder here because we have shed most of our skilled industries in favour of service jobs. Who are they serving?

The folks with money will keep money, the others, like me, will look at this report and gently go mad. This recession isn't the same as the last one. Get a new information source.
Politics as football 1:25pm on 05 Sep 2008 The shenanigans yesterday have strengthened my feeling that the Scottish parliament is becoming a very poor representative body for the Scottish people. To think that they are to be given more powers to raise money is quite difficult to understand. Notwithstanding any parochial views the assembly lacks leadership and personality.

We don't need the Scottish Parliament to become a House of Congress where the politicians fill their bellies in the trough of self interest because, as yesterday showed, self interest is often not in the interest of the Scottish people.
Poulter's chance to reward captain's faith 9:30pm on 31 Aug 2008 I feel that Nick Faldo has made a mistake in not selecting Darren Clarke who has been in great form. I can't help thinking that the mistake is in leaving out one of the greatest match players of recent Ryder Cups.

It appears that Nick Faldo had made his mind up before the Darren Clarke's success in Holland leave Poulter and Casey free to go back to pursue the bucks in the USA and Darren's return to form at the best possible time represented an inconvenient truth for Mr. Faldo. Let's hope that Mr. Poulter's CO2 emissions regarding his own ego don't have a detrimental effect on the team.
Taekwondo needs to move with the times 10:24am on 25 Aug 2008 I agree with mightymike's comment about the denigration of TKD. The competition version of the sport kind of misses the point of trying to better your body and spirit for the good of mankind.

The competitive sport has to look at itself and the conduct of the players starting from the ground up. The most sickening thing for me during the olympics wasn't the Stevenson incident, it was the almost uniform appealing for a point during the competition. This is directly opposed to one of the central tenets of TKD which is modesty and good spirit.

As for the Cuban's excuse of having a broken toe - my heart bleeds for him. I've been training for 3 months with two broken fingers.
Taekwondo needs to move with the times 6:08pm on 24 Aug 2008 It is interesting to see the debate and I suppose it's good for the sport that there is enough interest to spark a debate. The points raised miss the mark though.

TKD is responsible enough to police itself and to make controversial decisions to safeguard the integrity of the sport. Sarah Stevenson won - the result after appeal was corrected. The Cuban violent criminal and his coach have been banned for life from the sport. Another correct decision.

The key point is to improve the scoring mechanism. My suggestion would not be to place sensors in the hugu but to rig up sensors in the blocking pads. Any scoring points would be counteracted by the blocking sensors. This would cut out a majority of the subjectivity on judging decisions.

Free use of guide dogs for some judges might help too!
