Woods's only option was to step away 6:24pm on 13 Dec 2009 Who knows if Woods is genuinely contrite or not, but I am drawn to the view that his contrition and remorse arises from having been exposed, rather than having any genuine conscience about his actions as long as. he was able to keep them secret.
Seems more than a bit cynical to me.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging him, but hell matt, are you seriously suggesting that the fact that Clinton survived his own lies, deceit and abuse of his position,and came out richer and more popular should be used as an example to which we should aspire?
If your question is genuine and not ironic, let's just say that Clinton should have been pilloried and shamed as an unfit person to hold the office which he shamed.The fact that he wasn't, should be a matter of huge regret to everyone who now regards him in a positive light,not an example of how we should treat those in the public eye who behave improperly.
But a president of the USA and an unpleasant golfer are not the same,and after few months with his head under the bedclothes(domestic that is), an interview with his good friend Oprah, some public tears and a few well rehearsed expressions of regret later, all will be well again in the solitary, self-obsessed world of Eldrick Tont Woods.

Woods's only option was to step away 4:14pm on 13 Dec 2009 Sorry matt, but your sweeping generalisation about marriage,family and children being incompatible with golf and tennis does stand up to any real scrutiny, as there are many very happily married families in both sports.It may be true to say that it is not for everyone,but that is true of life in general not just sport.It all depends on the individual.
Woods's only option was to step away 3:51pm on 13 Dec 2009 So Superman,aka Tiger Woods is no more.The monstrous creation of the golfing media,sycophantic press, corporate America and his own ego is temporarily going to wear his pants inside his trousers for the time being.
Let's hope that he never bespoils this sport again, but that maybe,just maybe, at some point, we might see a new and altogether sympathetic alter ego at some point in the future - welcome Eldrick Woods, a smiling, self-effacing, extraordinarily talented but modest golfer who takes time to enjoy his achievements and accepts the adulation of his fans and fellow professional players, with good grace, humour and an appreciation of the fact that there is more to life than merely striving to eclipse the achievements of those who have gone before.
If not - good riddance!
Woods's only option was to step away 6:41pm on 12 Dec 2009 To be honest, I don't like Eldrick Woods -and for goodness sake can we all drop the nickname? Partly to do with the sycophantic and indulgent reportage like that of Mr.Carter, with which golf fans have had to put up for years,endowing superhuman qualities in someone who was as flawed on the course( spitting, swearing, puerile club slamming,self-absorbed and rude)as it now appears he is away from it.
All of which is not to say that I, like millions of others haven't marvelled at his tenacity, ability and prowess and admired his achievements.
However, if some of us now allow ourselves the luxury of poking some fun at this fall from grace, it is not because we hate him, but rather that we been conditioned during the 'Eldrick Years' to view him as invulnerable, inassailable and untouchable - in effect as Superman, by Carter and his ilk.
So what is it I? dislike about him - precisely those qualities which have served to present as him so distant from every mortal sports fan on the planet.
For me, mere ability and the capacity to win are not sufficient to deserve the allegiance of any sports fan. If they were, we would ALL be Eldrick fans,Man Utd.fans(perish the thought),Roger Federer fans etc.
But we aren't, and the reason we aren't is because we have to find something else in our sporting heroes which draws us to support them, and for me, those qualities in Woods are largely absent.
So please, now that he has been exposed to us all as just another bloke with all the same frailties as everyone else, don't criticise us for our opinions, but understand that it those responsible for building Woods into something which he could never be, who should now be taking a long hard look at themselves in the mirror.
And finally,if he doesn't return, it will be sad, but not insurmountable for the game - and as for Mr Carter and the rest, there's always Rory Mcilroy to turn into the next media monster.
And as for Eldrick? He hasn't done anything which a few tears shed in public - most likley with his good mate Oprah - won't cure, and hopefully we may yet the return of a great and who knows genuinely more contrite and humbler sportsman. But I doubt it.
Capello at home in hostile Zagreb 8:58pm on 09 Sep 2008 Could anyone tell me objectively what they have seen in any of England's performances under Capello to suggest that anything has changed since McClaren?
I've seen nothing so far which leads me to believe that they are capable of beating the side which lit up Euro '08 on their home turf.
If we're lucky, we'll limp through qualification - thankfully it is easier to qualify for a World Cup than a european championship, and if we're not, Signor Capello will disappear in to the night telling everyone how he was unable to deliver the required perfomances with a squad of over-rated and technically inept players - cue Jose.

Why not go one better and play all our qualifiers behind closed doors - most of us can't watch the game anyway. Could the Beeb and ITV not have set aside their differences and put in a joint bid?
Anyway, if none of us actually watched them, Capello might fool us into believing that we have a team capable of renewing our faith in them after two years of crushing disappointment.
If they're afraid to face their own fans at Wembley, maybe we should all save ourselves the train fares, petrol and time off work and leave them and Setanta to it!
Capello at home in hostile Zagreb 8:02pm on 09 Sep 2008 While much has been made of Capello's detached professional approach, in contrast to McClaren's over-familiar style. Personally i couldn't care less whether or not the players get to breakfast on time, can eat with a knife and fork or wear a tie.
So far I've seen nothing in England's friendlies and match against the mighty Andorra to suggest that it is making any difference whatsoever.
I do have doubts that Capello is the motivational and tactical genius that many believe him to be. Have we all forgotten that it was only when he was forced by public opinion to bring Beckham back into the team, that Real won the title?
A defeat tomorrow night will be enough for me. Why did we ditch Sven?
Time for England to trust Joe Cole 7:51pm on 09 Sep 2008 I don't think it's all that important whether Cole starts or not.What really matters is who finishes, and if Joe is our main hope for goals, then victory over tomorrow, and qualification will be just a dream.
The fact is that no matter how creative we are or not, we simply don't have any strikers on whom we can rely to weigh in with a goal every other game.
