Three years in China 11:09am on 07 Jul 2009 As a BBC journalist, James has done a much better job than many of his colleagues back at home.
Working abroad, especially in China, requires tremendous energy, courage and resilience.

As if 1989 never happened 2:00pm on 17 Jun 2009 When it happened, I was just a middle school student. But I did remember many adults tried to tune into news broadcast by what was then called 'the voice of the US' (meiguozhiyin)so as to know the full scale of the tragedy. Deep down, many Chinese know the truth even though they were forced to silence it and bury it.
I burst into tears when I watched a BBC documentary last night; my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the mothers and fathers who lost their young sons and daughters!

There is a difference between reverence for age and desire for young-looking appearance. The former emphasises 'experienced' or 'senior' in rank, i.e. the importance of interpersonal social relations, whereas the later suggests physical or bodily maintenance--a growing trend widely observed across many parts of the world.
Tough words on human rights 2:06pm on 02 Mar 2009 At the macro level of debate between countries such as the US and China, the issue of human rights is more concerned with power struggle among policticians than pertinent to ordinary Chinese and American people.

Politics should not be confused with reality.

Politicians or the policy-making elite are far from representative of their own people.

Before taking sides over 'human rights', it'd better to think first about 'humanity'.
China's new generation gap 1:47pm on 24 Jan 2009 It is indeed fascinating to capture contemporary China in terms of generational gap.

Both in modern cities and rural viliages, daughters/sons are negotiating and creating new relationships with their parent generations.

Adding to this is city-countryside divide and what is often referred to in British contexts as class: upper, middle, working, and under classes.

It is time to dispel the myth of a communist society where the invocation of 'we Chinese' tends to deflect people's attention from how divided and differentiated we Chinese are, depending on a complex of factors including age, gender, family background, education, region, and so forth.

One of the ills in the communist system is that the compliance with, and for some the glamorisation of, the government often leads to blind and cruel disregard for those who suffer from unfair treatment.

This doesn't mean the democratic system is short of problems. The celebration of freedom speech and human right is sometimes a major hindrance to important collective goals. And in the U.S., the slippery concept of 'freedom' often exacerbates the yawning divide between those who have freedom in every sense and those who are socially and financially deprived but are nonetheless 'emotionally' free.

I grow up in China and have lived in different democratic countries. By nature, the state governance doesn's differ much. But by degree, China does need to do more to improve its treatment of those disadvantaged--not you and me here who can afford to indulge ourselves in debate as a pastime.

In either case, I think it's important for journalists, as James puts it, 'to report on what people are angry about, and how their actions are dealt with by the authorities'.

He reminds me of China's rare giant panda, reveling in all the attention that he himself may never understand!

I am sure it is not difficult for James to catch him next time, just run a bit faster and offer him his favourite food.

It is smarter to control behind the scenes than exposing yourself to the full.

I believe this remains a cardinal principle of international diplomacy in China.

shrewd move, I would say, given the repulsive example of 'international police' that the U.S. has set up across the world.
