Cameron's very personal plea 10:59pm on 08 Oct 2009 Problem with Cameron, nice enough guy though he is, is that he has inherited the leadership of a party that hasn't had a "big idea" since about 1947 ... it used to be that the Tories stood for business, freedom of the individual and the Empire . Now, of course, we dont have an empire, the freedom of the individual has been a given for 40 odd years and business, in the shape of greedy bankers and financiers has been exposed as little more than a mafia-style racket. So what is he left with? .. stressing the stout values of the family... nothing wrong with that .. personally I'm all in favour of strengthening the family in British society in all kinds of ways but simply telling families they're in for a rough time under a Tory government, is not clever. Cameron has a 9 point lead in the polls... very good, but any pollster will tell you that a general election campaign, if it doesn't go well, will cost you 4 -5 percentage points .... and a 4 or 5 point lead on polling day wont give the Tories the government they crave .

Cameron keeps schtum on Lisbon 06:13am on 05 Oct 2009 So, if polls are to be believed, over 80% of rank and file Conservative Party members want Britain to withdraw from the EU .. not a proverbial Rizla paper then between the Tories and UKIP.... and Cameron has written a letter to the Czech President, but he wont tell whats in it. Oh go on, Nick! have an informed guess .. bet you're right.
Technology pushes political agenda 9:51pm on 13 Aug 2009 I dont think the US right wing fundamentalists attack on the British NHS has anything to do with diverting attention from any subject in the UK political agenda. This is some very nasty people using their official mouthpiece - Fox News, owned by Murdoch - to attack President Obama. Their arguments on healthcare, like most else they spout, are garbage ... and doesn't really mask at all what all thinking Americans know full well ... that these people are opposed to Obama because he isn't white. It really is as simple as that.

x tonbridge ... I know how you feel ... as a friend of mine 40-odd years ago used to say " Listening to the wishes of the people is fine, but what do you do when they're wrong ?"

Government not defeated 00:35am on 09 Jul 2009 #230 ... laugh ? .. I almost started to ... sink the boats carrying immigrants to Europe ... BNP sponsored submarines ? ... privately financed bomber aircraft loaded with tons of BNP election pamphlets ? .... patronising ? moi ?
Government not defeated 11:44pm on 08 Jul 2009 #205 ... indeed, this is an awful government ... but voting BNP ? ... dont even think about it dear .. this is a grown-up democracy where, hopefully, we argue about what should be done in a civilised fashion ... advocating that the only way to deal with immigration is to sink the boats that carry immigrants to Europe is beyond the pale .. these are the scum of the earth. Vote for who you like, but, at least give your vote to some party or other that supports decency and compassion .
A new style of Speaker? 7:47pm on 23 Jun 2009 a new style of speaker ? ... maybe, but a very old style of Tory Party. Political picture of the week has to be Cameron desperately, pleadingly trying to get his own MPs to have the good grace to clap the new speaker as he was dragged to the chair, without much success.... so, as usual, Tories dont like the will of the majority expressed through a secret ballot... unless it corresponds with their own views ... and this is the party that will, barring some astonishing fluke, form our government for the next few decades .... Oh Dear !
A call for debate 5:10pm on 10 Jun 2009 It's what we've all been crying out for, is'nt it ? ... everyone I know has been saying " To Hell with a general election.. stuff the recession ... yah boo sucks to rising unemployment ... stick the moral bancruptcy of the House of Commons up your jumper ... let's for God's sake, tinker about a bit with the way we elect our parliaments . That's the really important issue facing the country today." ... and lo and behold, Mr. Brown's government, always in tune with the real needs of the electorate, has responded ... Yippee! Makes you feel good to be alive, doesn't it ?
A question of when, not if 11:47pm on 18 May 2009 #137 .... sorry, but the epithet "Gorbals Mick" is an insulting term in Glasgow for a slum-dwelling Irish immigrant ... and as such, has no place on this blog ... calling the man Michael Martin .. which is what he prefers to be known as - which is the only thing that matters - we all have a right to be called by the name we prefer, not something someone else decides is appropriate ... in no way diminishes the main point that he is a disaster and ought to resign ...
