Man City will regret lack of ambition 09:32am on 22 Nov 2009 Spot on about City's approach. They are not playing with a top 4 mentality, never mind that of title challengers. This has been clear for weeks, months even. It became painfully obvious in the draw with Aston Villa, a side they should be finishing above, according to their ambitions. With the scores level approaching the end of the game, City were happy to sit back and take the point, instead of looking for a winner - even when 4 minutes of added time were signalled. A team like United or Chelsea - heck, even Liverpool - would have bombarded the Villa box, doing everything they could, right up to the last second. If City don't change this attitude they will not challenge the top 2 or 3. The only way they can finish fourth is if Villa and Spurs fade (again) and Liverpool continue to flounder.
Life in the old dogs yet 10:14am on 30 Aug 2009 I don't see how anyone can say that Arsenal deserved the win. Yes, they passed it around well and dominated the first half, but the fact remains that they made two crucial errors in their own penalty area, and United didn't. That's why Arsenal lost, and deserved to, despite all their good play.

But I agree that United were unconvincing and need a midfield spark. Liverpool have Gerrard, Chelsea have Lampard and Arsenal have Fabregas. United don't have that driving force in midfield. Carrick isn't that type of player, Anderson isn't up to the task (not yet, anyway) and Scholes is too old to play regularly.

Actually Robbo, Wenger specifically said that he was NOT blaming the pitch, that his side had let in two bad goals, but was commenting on the pitch as inadequate for such a prestigious venue. Ferguson did say he picked a weakened team because of the pitch, but he didn't actually blame the surface for the result.

England still need Owen 7:31pm on 30 Mar 2009 I agree that while Owen is never going to be a first-choice striker again, he could have a role to play as an impact sub, much in the way that Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer scored some vital goals for Man United coming on as a late sub. His experience and finishing ability could well swing games for England in the dying stages, as you suggest in the blog.

It's looking more and more like Ferguson was right when he said in pre-season that Chelsea had an aging squad and that he couldn't see them improving much.

No carping about Kaka coup 1:14pm on 16 Jan 2009 To me it looks like City have got the icing on before they've even bought the flour. They have so much attaccking talent - Robinho, SWP, Elano, Petrov (one of the best left wingers in the country when fit) and Ireland, who has been their best player this season. They don't need another - scoring goals has not been their problem.

They need a defensive midfielder, and everyone seems to know this except Sparky and the chequebooks.

If Kaka leaves a world-class team, a stable club and regular Champions League football for, basically, a cartload of cah, I will be bitterly, bitterly disappointed in him. He's always seemed like one of the few footballing superstars with a firm grounding in reality. I really am hoping he'll spare me even more disillusionment by staying at AC Milan. Hopefully he does become captain there and has a long, successful and admirable career in Italy rather than being remembered as the fool who left his principles and ambition behind for money.
Button it Benitez! 4:55pm on 13 Jan 2009 When Berba tapped in Ronaldo's free kick on Saturday, he was being "marked" at the free kick by Santo. United had 3 (THREE) players in the box, yet you leave one of the most dangerous finishers in the league with a 19-year-old striker. No defenders available? This shocking marking and the mind-boggling absence of a defender on the post (costly against Fulham and United) suggest that Scolari's tactics need serious work.
I don't care much though, we're laughing all the way to the title.

And Ferguson spouts nonsense day in, day out, every season. None of it really means anything, but it riles people up no end - that's the point. Most sensible people in the game have learned not to get worked up about it. Until recently, I would have included Rafa in that category.
Oh well.
