Still searching for answers 12:35pm on 12 May 2009 I think you need to explore a little deeper into chinese media. The official chinese media (e.g. Xinhua) is known by most to have its own version of the news. However, a lot of news these days is unofficially carried by internet and many many people look deeper than the CCTV news.

Froom outside China, I can tell you that the government actually dealt very well with the earthquake. It WAS quick, it WAS compassionate and clearing up the aftermath is NOT a good time to point fingers and appoint blame. I don't think anyone in China thinks of Wen Jiabao as a national hero - he's just relatively competent compared to most of his predecessors. I have no idea where you got the "god-like" government from. The government in china is seen no differently to the government here, except with perhaps less whining.

If you're going to go for jackalopes, you may as well go for a flying jackalope (habitat: South Dakota), tame it and use it as a flying mount, holding onto its antlers as it swoops majestically across the sky.
"We blame the parents" 10:35am on 02 Feb 2009 Let's see, could it possibly be... that for the first time we're thinking (far, far too much) about the happiness of children because we no longer need to think so much about providing basics for them and bringing them up to be sensible, wage-earning adults?

I can't believe the ban for advertising to under-12s. The fact that toy adverts have become too politically incorrect is ludicrous.

The reason why dysfunctional children come from lone parents is not because lone parenting is bad in general. It's because that figure is skewed by bad teenage mothers in council flats. Stop these people reproducing and you'd have happier children simply because more of them are actually planned and wanted.

As for young adolescents - if you're not doing enough to keep busy (i.e. getting a job, concentrating on study), then you have time to think too much. If they occupied their minds with something other than introspection, they'd be a lot less unhappy. Our society now focuses on thinking and talking about our emotions very openly, which is good in some ways, but as we're not encouraged to distract ourselves instead (this is apparently "repression"), you have problems arising from simply thinking too much. This is coming from someone who had a miserable teenagerhood and is looking back, by the way.
The incredible shrinking fish 10:44pm on 13 Jan 2009 It's interesting to see evolution in action, but I don't necessarily see the link to environmentalism and preservation. As part of the ecosystem, we naturally have an impact on the evolution of plants and animals around us. The impact isn't always destructive and the point of evolution is to reshape organisms.

Why shouldn't anyone do jobs without job satisfaction? If they couldn't be bothered do work hard enough to gain the qualifications/experience for the jobs they want, then why do they automatically deserve one? There are the more menial jobs out there - who do you propose we get to do those?

Study at a decent university and at a third-rate one is quite different. The pace of study and how hard you're worked differ entirely, not to mention what you learn and how well you learn it. If you couldn't work hard enough at school to push yourself into somewhere decent then you've only yourself to blame.

Take another look. It wasn't the upper-class who clamoured for so much money that the industries were forced to shut down because they could no longer be competitive.
Protection for great apes 09:01am on 07 Nov 2008 How utterly ridiculous. That's a judgement based entirely on sentiment and squeamishness, not morality. Proof of this is that animal activists only seem to care about animals which are cute, fluffy, or have some sort of appeal. The idea of moving research onto invertebrates is implausible, because while they do have less developed nervous and pain systems and might suffer less (but mainly they're just less cute and people care less bothered about them), their systems are so different from humans that for many tests, the information gained simply isn't useful.

The point of animal testing is so that humans aren't tested on. As to what animal is chosen, it should be on a scientific/practical (i.e. expense) basis only. Morally, there is no difference between choosing a rabbit and a chimpanzee.
Nobel prize for dissident? 00:46am on 04 Nov 2008 I dislike the idea of activism and absolutely disagree with the praise and heroism heaped on it. Activism is what people do when they're not intelligent enough to do something useful about the situation they're blabbering on about, like try to improve the situation in a realistic and sustainable way. Activism is full of smug and self-righteous finger-pointing. Even if I did agree with this guy's ideas, he's expressing them in a totally obtuse and inappropriate way.

Dramatic change in China would be appalling for the majority of the population, which is why change is taking place, but slowly and sustainably. We don't need anyone to tell us there are things wrong with our country - we know there are things which are wrong, and until they are improved at a sensible pace, we have to work with what we have, which includes following the rules.
Comparing China and Cuba 00:32am on 04 Nov 2008 That was an excellent and insightful article. It's so rare to find a fair and non-judgemental view on socialism!
China 'moves on' from Liu Xiang 5:53pm on 20 Aug 2008 -"After Liu Xiang?s pull out, the Chinese internet was filled with disappointments, encouragements, blames, anger, and various kinds of messages. The Government then released a statement that basically says that people should express understanding, and not give pressure to Liu. Thereafter almost all the messages of blame and anger disappeared from the Chinese internet."

There were disappointed people, yes, but they had every right to be disappointed. The majority of reactions were sympathetic despite the disappointment. The few initial negative reactions probably gave way to more sympathetic ones once people cooled down and had time to think things through (do remember that many people spent an awful lot for tickets just to see him).

And no, personal reactions from people would not change in the slightest upon release of a statement from the Government. I can't think of anything more ridiculous, really. We are not dummies and the Government do not pull our strings.

Because it's a long-held assumption in China that the Chinese are physically not suited to field and track events. He's proved this wrong, therefore we are proud. What's the problem with this?

Also, why are there so many political statements on the comments? How on earth do they relate to the blog contents?
