They were trusted to not claim more than they needed to meet unavoidable expenses that being an MP required of them.

Instead of behaving honourably many of them behaved like accountants, perhaps at the behest of their accountants, claiming the maximum amount they could; indulging in sharp practices to that end. Legally they may have no case to answer, but morally they do.

For them to still be resisting maintains their breath taking hypocrisy of 'do as I say not as I do'; one of the reasons that particular individuals have been picked out for special criticism.

Paying for politics: The Spectator app 3:07pm on 29 Sep 2009 If someone produces a product that's perceived to be worth paying for then people will buy it; in whatever way it's delivered.

The BBC satisfies my on line news needs, which I pay for through my TV licence.

However it is a problem when commercial interests are lobbying to have the market rigged so that I have to pay the BBC again, at the point of delivery, for my news coverage because they can't compete.

They should up the quality of their product to make it worth buying, not dip their hand in my pocket to compensate for their lack of a compelling product.
Lily unites musicians against file-sharing 5:46pm on 27 Sep 2009 We didn't ban cars because they put farriers out of business, they had to start selling petrol. There are whole sectors of business that have disappeared through technological advances. Record companies were happy enough with digital technology when they could resell us their back catalogues at inflated prices, now they've got hold of the other end of the stick. They have to learn the lesson from King Canute and adapt or die; that's if you believe their entirely unsubstantiated position that every file swap equates to a lost sale, which is costing them millions a year. The fact that they have flooded the market with undifferentiated product probably has nothing to do with the fact that consumers value it at considerably less than the companies want to charge for it and are therefore refusing to buy it. Or are they? There are no reliable figures in this debate, only hype, which is appropriate considering the record companies invented the practice.
Not so special? 2:07pm on 24 Sep 2009 The 'special relationship' is a piece of Churchillian PR. It's a one way street. Most ordinary Americans I've ever mentioned it to don't know what I'm talking about.
Corner shop culture 09:06am on 13 Sep 2009 Culture isn't about buying your items as conveniently and cheaply as possible, the culture in the corner shop is chatting to the person behind the counter, that's what the supermarkets are squashing now they're back to hoover up the crumbs they gaily abandoned.
Are 'broken families' responsible for 'Broken Britain'? 3:34pm on 09 Sep 2009 The Tories should look to themselves. The Thatcherite credo considerably exacerbated the pressure on the ordinary people of this country, making a major contribution to the selfish dysfunctionality we see in today's society. The Labour party adopted that credo to get elected and have done little to ameliorate its effects. The winners in society, who hold the power, have no incentive to tackle it as long as their wealth protects them from the consequences of it on a daily basis.
What can music teach telly? 4:27pm on 28 Aug 2009 Through the net people are making friendships all over the world, with people they talk to on a very regular basis. They want to share TV programs they enjoy. The TV iPlayers are the perfect vehicle for this, if only the licensing could be remodelled.
Who is batting for file-sharing proposals? 4:17pm on 25 Aug 2009 The government, at its highest levels doesn't get the internet. They're such easy meat that they keep inviting self interested lobby groups on board as advisers. The interests of business in the internet, those of the government and indeed those of the electorate (not that anybody considers us as stakeholders) are not congruent. They're just adding fuel to the bonfire of their vanities to come.
