Sports Personality shortlist announced 12:27pm on 02 Dec 2008 I personally have to vote for Ben Ainslie. Three gold medals in 3 succesive olympics in such a physically and mentally demanding discipline (yes really - if you dont believe me - try it yourself.) outshines all the other Olympic contenders by a mile. The bikers were awesome, but Big Ben is something else. Sadly it will probably go to Lewis Hamilton due to the strange obsession we have with F1.
Sailors provide perfect handover 10:21am on 22 Aug 2008 Well its all over - no more live Championship sailing on TV for 4 years. The red button coverage wasn't perfect but I have really enjoyed watching live sailing every morning with my breakfast. Oh and what sailing too! Cliffhanging medal races with triumphant Brits and some sad disappointments as well. Sailing Team GB overall have done a fantastic job. This really was a team effort of everyone, not just the guys in the boats.
Super-heavyweight Price is (up)right for boxing glory 08:56am on 19 Aug 2008 Why is it a problem that we are winning in Sailing, Rowing and Cycling? The fantastic performances of these three teams has lifted Britain from the also rans up into the major powerhouse nations of the medal table. If you watch all three of these teams there is a common factor - sheer professionalism. Perhaps thats why we are not really very comfortable with the success. The summariser at the cycling said the Brits had to be quiet when they saw the coxless 4 winning on the monitor because so much success in the velodrome has made the Brits unpopular - unbelieveable!!
Ainslie and Ayton live up to hype 5:20pm on 18 Aug 2008 It is always difficult to compare sporting achieving in very different sports. The physical effort required to sail a high perfomance dinghy in a championship race in Windy conditions, such as the medal race in the Finn yesterday, should not be underestimated. Ainslie is a superb athlete and was clearly untouchable by the rest of the Finn class as the conditions got more demanding. Its probably true that its easier to sustain a dinghy racing career over 20 years than a rowing career, but if Ainslie can win in Weymouth it will still be a huge achievement and no mistake.
