Its the Olympic games after all. 17.62m would never have been long enough to get gold at an olympic since 1988.

If you are World No.1, you have to win. Trouble is, deep down, Philips doesnt believe his own hype.

Before you make claims like that, you need to back it up with ability.

I never thought he'd win as to be a great champion you need great genetics, train hard, and thirst to win at all costs under the highest pressure. Philips has 2 out 3 of these.

Irrespective of seassons bests or PBs, he should of won. Period.

Compare him to Jan Zelenzy in 2000. Backley broke the olympic record. Next round Zelenzy broke it back. Thats what you need to be a champ.

He did better than i thought, but never a champ.

If you go into the tournament as World No.1, win every meet you go to, you expect gold.

If he was a true champ, he should of responded.

So what does that say?

It says even Philips at his best, isnt good enough.

Will always live in Jonathan Edwards shadow, unless he wins in London 2012 and breaks the WR.

The competition looks weak this year, so 17.50-17.60 could win. Unthinkable at other games.

Rowers rule but they're still not perfect 6:42pm on 17 Aug 2008 I think the rowers on a whole did well.

However, after watching the heats of the womens quad, the chinese looked awesome and the British team looked pushed, even though they said it was easy, their body language said different.

I think its easy to come to terms with silver if you were beaten by a better team, and they were. They didnt lose gold, the chinese won it.
Paula deserves praise and plaudits 12:58pm on 17 Aug 2008 Radcliffe, Henman, Jimmy White, Asafa Powell, NZ rugby team...Anyone see any pattern here?
