Pushing string 4:41pm on 05 Feb 2009 Prof. Tim Congdon on the Daily Politics Show (cf)also says that the present policies will not work and that it is madness to try to persuade people to borrow again. That is part of the problem, not the solution. It was sad to see the Chairman of the Treasury Select Committee totally rejecting Prof. Congdon's idea.

More and more economists seem to be coming to your way of thinking - in fact some of them were announcing it some time ago.
Confusion on the wildcat strikes 5:41pm on 02 Feb 2009 While we are on about British jobs and British workers, what about the BRITISH PIG PRODUCERS. The British farmers have to use higher standards than their EU counterparts, who, until 2013, can go on using inhumane crates for the sows to live in for the the whole of their breeding lives (about 5 years) and export their pork product to this country undercutting our own.

We do produce better quality meat in a more humane way but still our government lets in the cheaper stuff and if they do that for one industry, what chance the British worker in other industries.

#307 - oh mightychewster, I have not heard so much commonsense about Europe in a long time. In fact not since I worked for joining the Common Market. It is the superstate idea which frightens so many, including many on the other side of the Channel as has been proved when the electorate have been allowed a say.

If oversight of bank lending had been left with the Bank of England, the lending boom would have been more controlled. They would have ensured that Northern Rock did have proper assets. The BOE had the knowledge and experience built in. The FSA did not.

And I should have said, this was what the Conservatives wanted.

Obamanomics 09:13am on 10 Dec 2008 David Cameron has said repeatedly that getting the money moving by insuring credit to small business is the way to go. This is not "do nothing" - it is doing something constructive.

When Gordon Brown says that lenders must lend to 2007 levels, that is frightening because we are in this mess because of easy lending.

So it is not going to be so easy to get a mortgage without having a deposit and the ability to pay back the loan. First its get out of debt by saving; then save for a deposit and then of course its necessary to have a job.

In retreat 11:13am on 02 Dec 2008 It was strange how the Home Secretary seemed to morph into the Head of Child Services at Haringey - the same sort of hackneyed phrases saying "it's not me gov".

The police need us to help them or so they keep telling us, but the actions that have been taken in this case so obviously alienate a great many judging by the bloggers over the last few days.

There is a sinister feel to this - if it can happen to an MP who obtains information that embarrasses the government (that should have been in the public domain anyway if the FOI worked properly) then what hope the rest of us who object to what the government do in our name.

And Nick, you have not made reference to the cosy little get together that Harriet Harman has called to ensure the Speaker gets his words right on Wednesday. Surely all parties should be represented in what is so obviously a cross party issue.
