Archery concerns need addressing 3:24pm on 06 Sep 2008 Well what can I say.....I am surprised at the amount of people willing to make nasty comments about Alan's valid comments about the performance of the GB archery team. I may not have been competing at international level, however, I am experienced enough to have seen that every GB archer was not shooting at all like they should have been......QUIT BASHING ALAN. Listen to what he has to say there is a problem within the GB archery team what it is I'm not sure but it is clearly not the archers fault or else why did Alison not acchieve more? they all failed to acchieve and these guys and girls are the best in the UK and in amongst the top archers in the world.
Goalie up front said 'Your preparation is 90% down to you, 5% the coach and 5% the environment.' at this level that 5% for the coach is all the difference between getting a medal and not. Both the womens and mens team scores were only 10 points or so out of getting a bronze which is funnily enough around 5% so when put like that you can see he should not be slammed for having the kahunas to stand up and shout about it. Archery is not given the right amount of support as it isn't really a spectator event and so get little coverage compared with athletics and so has a massive uphill struggle to gain the support needed.
As for darts as an olympic sport why not? however DO NOT KNOCK ARCHERY.....looooooong before football or rugby or the majority of sports Britain led the world in archery.......mainly cus it was a weapon of war but still it is our heritage and we should be proud and bring it back to THE TOP WHERE IT BELONGS AGAIN!!!!

Coping with the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune 9:37pm on 15 Aug 2008 Well said Gordon! It is indeed a sport where you are basically in competition against yourself and indeed I think that there were some coaching issues out in Beijing whether it was Suk's coaching style or something else I don't know as I wasn't there but it was clear from the whole teams performance that something was getting to them as even Alison was performing well under par (scuse the term) Maybe it was the lack of crowd control at the stadium....British archers are not use to that sort of poor behaviour as any FITA or GNAS judge would have had severe words with anyone making those kinds of distracting noises on purpose and can on occasions halt the competition untill relative peace can be restored. Anyway I just really hope that the big wigs in charge of finance get out of this poor habit of piling on the pressure to do well on the olympians and let them get on with the jobs at hand....I'm sure the USA and CHINA don't have the same penny pinching mentality to sport as we do hence why they win so very many more medals than we do.
So finally let's encourage the Paralympic archery team to bring us back some medals as don't forget they still have their competition to come! YAAY!!
Time to reflect on archery exit 9:12pm on 15 Aug 2008 Oh and p.s. The Great John Greaves of Windsor Forest Bowmen once said of my rookie mistake of using the term firing an arrow, 'There is no combustion in archery!' so please refer to his wisdom and use the term shoot or loose!! :) and I'm done!!
Time to reflect on archery exit 9:06pm on 15 Aug 2008 I would first of all like to congratulate the GB boys and girls who made it to the olympics this year as I know the scores needed to be achieved in the Fita Olympic round are incredibly high and to hear people being negative about team GB not getting any medals this year is just shocking to be honest, expecially so as they are all under intense pressure from the big wigs to do well or funds will be cut etc etc. Secondly did anyone actually watch the rounds as I did and i'm not surprised we had a struggle considering the incredible performances of the other teams such as China, Korea and the Ukraine (I loved the Ukrainians method of anchoring, very unique!!)
So as far I could see we may not have done as well as we would have liked but the fact that we didn't come last was something to be cheerfull about. As for anyone who may think that Alan was a bit grumpy after...you would too as untill you have been on the line after loosing arrow after arrow at a distance of 70 metres and a draw weight in excess of 30 lbs at a target that when seen from the line looks like a tiny penny sized gold dot!! yes they are olympians but don't forget that for a few of them it was their first olympics and lets face it the crowd were in my eyes shocking with all sorts of shouts and whistles etc while the archers were in the equivalent of a golfing backswing! offputting to any archer from the uk considering GNAS/FITA judges here would remove anyone from the crowds here that would try the same thing in fact i was a bit put off myself when the koreans and chinese archers themselves would squawk whilst on the line themselves.
Anyway good luck in the field archery and don't give up on 2012 Alan!
Don't forget we have the paralympic archery team still who always seem to win us some medals I know Kathy Smith is a great archer and have been in competitions and practice with her so I know she will do brilliantly for us all
