Paralympics seeking out new talent 6:31pm on 26 Sep 2008 During the Olympics these Blogs were generating much comment. I've scrolled through the most recent Olympic Blogs and there is hardly any comment. Seems that the Great British public has already shifted their attention to the Premiership. Same old story, the chance of maintaining interest in Kayaking, Archery, Rowing, Sailing and Paralympic Sport between now 2012 is nil, zilch, non, no chance! Your average man in the street is not interested in these sports, they are interested in the olympics as an event and that is why there is such a swell of interest during the Games themselves - but afterwards....nothing! It will be very interesting to see how much interest there is in the 'delayed' parade of medal winners in Oct. I reckon if the authorities would have held it on the day the team landed back in the UK, people would have skipped work in their droves to attend - now - not a chance of them even turning the telly on to watch!

This may be a very un-PC view - but I think the paralympics are a complete turn off as a sporting spectacle. Furthermore, I do not believe there is a groundswell of interest amongst the wider British public. Look at the Paralympic blogs on this website - they generate hardly any comment. It's difficult to quantify why this is the case as everyone acknowledges the endeavour, bravery, determination and strength of character demonstrated by our paralympians - they are inspirational - but that alone does not make it an entertaining watch. It may be something to do with the ongoing bewilderment surrounding participant categorisation - a complete mess. I watched a swim race on Tues which included swimmers with what appeared completely different physical disability which finsihed with the winner a full length ahead of some of her rivals (it was a relatively short race). And here is my problem - at the heart of all sporting drama and 'entertainment' is the highest level of competitive rivalry, unpredictability (apart from Phelps and Bolt), where the smallest margins determine victory from defeat. I just don't think this is the case with the majority of paralympic sport where there appears huge discrepancies between participant ability, diluting the rivalry, increasing the predictability and rendering the spectacle very dull. Readers should not take offence where none is intended - but as I say, inspirational yes - entertaining no, no, and no again. Consequently, I wouldn't lose too much sleep if the paralympic coverage was reduced to a one-hour highlights show each day. Sorry!

I don't understand your point. Of course it's a 'British Broadcasting Corporation' award - but the clue is in the category title - it is the 'overseas' award, suggesting that the winner should perhaps come from OVERSEAS - somewhere else - not of these Isles - a foreigner - a 'non-Brit' ! If you are saying that the overseas winner should be a sports participant who has primarily been broadcast plying their trade on the BBC then we can forget about all of your listed sports apart from tennis and 'some' rugby (with football highlights).

Your point is completely emptyheaded - articulate yourself properly so we can assess it's voracity. In the meantime, in response to the question 'Is that a big enough pool of people for you'......answer is no! If I want to vote for Tiger Woods who hasn't appeared in Britain this year - then I will. why? He is from over the sea - the only criteria he needs to fill!

I've asked this question (without reply) on a different blog. Why was John Inverdale so under-utilised during the Olympics coverage? Live continuity between rowing races is hardly maximising the talents of the best sports presenter on any network. I know he does radio 5 live (brilliantly) - but everyone knows the high profile 'A-list' presenters are on the telly. Sue Barker, Gabby Logan, Claire Balding,Hazel Irvine et.al are all able anchors but truth is, they can't hold a candle to Inverdale. Could it be he is the wrong gender?

Ref #41.....What are the BBC's plans for Inverdale? He never seems to get the big 'anchor' role at the Olympics - yet on Rugby and particularly Wimbledon, he is peerless (even though Sue Barker gets the prime-time live spots).
Olympics figures continue to impress 10:09am on 20 Aug 2008 Roger - Gabby, Sue Barker, Adrian Chiles are all able anchor presenters but when are you going to make more of John Inverdales consumate sporting knowledge and broadcasting skill. He is an outstanding communicator, a brilliant interviewer and a genuine sports nut! This combination produces the best sports broadcaster working in the field on any network - his work on Radio 5 live is consistently outstanding. Use him or lose him. Conversley, Matt doing the main gymnastics commentary is somewhat populist and lack's 'gravitas' in my opinion. Serious sport deserves serious sports broadcasting, where is Barry Davies? I thought he had retired but understand he is in Bejing with the BBC.

What right have you lot and this Adrian guy have to tell us about these plans? You lot bang on about London 2012 being dissapointed they couldn't keep the plans a secret..well with you gossips and big-mouths around announcing it to the world they haven't got a chance. Your a bunch of lightweights and hipocrits and you should have kept it quiet!
