Coming to Maradona's defence 5:36pm on 03 Nov 2008 Extremely well written blog... Can't disagree with anything you said. And let's face it, the biggest issue here is that it happened against England.

If Maradona was to score this goal against another country, lets say a continental rival of England. Then went on to call it the hand of god, it probably would have been celebrated by a lot of the same who have labeled him a cheat. Thats football fans for you.
Lies, damned lies and statistics 2:27pm on 10 Oct 2008 I too find problems with the way they went about gathering some of their stats, particularly using 1-1 draws to determine whether there is a greater risk of conceding right after scoring.

From a science point of view it doesn't make sense, why study matches that only offer 1 chance of proving the theory right? If it ends 1-1 then cleary your already at 50% of the time its not true because nobody scored after the equaliser. In fact using 1-1 games seems about as useless as using 0-0.

I did like the bit about players celebrating together have more success. When I watch football I'm always looking to see the reactions of the other players, especially other goal getters, when someone other them themself has scored. I think it really shows who is in it for the team, and who is in it for personal glory.

Since 2004 how many goals have been scored by English strikers? I know Rooney had 0 in qualification for Germany 2006... the total is probably less the 10 the last few years.

After Micheal Owen's fall from consistancy thanks to fitness, England havent had anything close to a world class striker. What are Lampard, Gerrard, Barry.. for that matter anyone going to accomplish with nothing up front?

As great as Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas were it was the ability of Villa, Torres, and Guiza that gave them something to work with.

No coincidence at all in my mind that England's struggles started to manifest itself when Rooney became the first choice striker.
