On how many occasions has a keeper taken a test scalp and was Boucher the last?
What is the point of the rugby league World Cup? 5:21pm on 23 Oct 2008 It is hard not to accept League as a game exclusively for Northern folk when every player or fan that gets interviewed has a strong Yorkshire or Lancashire accent. Even Sky's reporter had the stereotypical "ee-oop" way of speaking. Additionally, League has never caught on in the south despite game efforts to popularise it. I and many others from the south simply fail to find the sequence of seven crash balls and seven restarts followed by an up and under a very exciting spectacle. Having said that, I will watch the games if they are being shown on DSTV Africa. I would even cheer my beloved England on in bowls and lacrosse!

Walcott and Capello stun Croatia 08:37am on 11 Sep 2008 Anyone agree that Walcott needs a move (if only a loan move) to ensure he remains at a high standard for the games to come? Rotting on the bench at Arsenal is not going to help the national team's cause.
Walcott and Capello stun Croatia 08:00am on 11 Sep 2008 Apart from the result the most refreshing thing about the performance was the fact that we have seen that Capello is an attack-minded coach. His system was not 442 but closer to the continental 4231 but with only one anchor man (Barry). Put Gerrard in the other midfield role and the offensive aspect of the team will be even further enhanced (not that Lampard had a bad game - who did?).

It was also gratifying to see Capello urging his team forward when we had those long periods of possession in the second half. Sequences of 40 or 50 passes are nice, they wear down the opposition and get the crowd chanting "olé" but Capello would prefer to see a goal at the end of it. GD is going to be a factor in this campaign with Ukraine also starting well and Croatia certain to bounce back and so we must be ruthless. I thus expect a similar attitide against the minnows from Kazakhstan and Belarus next month.

With the country back behind the team, we can expect a more positive attitude from the fans at Wembley on October 11th and that will only help the team.
England must raise game in Zagreb 10:34pm on 07 Sep 2008 Gerrard's comments about wishing to play only in central midfield and being so good that he is deployed elsewhere reek of egotism and the same kind of disloyalty that that other Scouser Carragher recently showed. The fact is that Gerrard cannot play well on the right, cannot play well on the left, doesn't like being the anchor man and cannot operate as a attacking midfielder behind a lone centre forward. Oh, and he also cannot operate in the same midfield as Lampard.

Does this sound like a quality international football player to you?

Ashley leaves Newcastle in chaos 1:13pm on 03 Sep 2008 A lot of media outlets have been left with egg on their faces over this and yet, to mix my metaphors, not much humble pie is being eaten. Newcastle FC look bad because the media, hurting due to their humiliation yesterday, choose to portray them in that way. No one yet knows what has happened or what will happen and consequently who can say who is the true culprit: a hands-on owner or a temperamental manager?
