Global financial crisis hits Ashley's price tag 3:06pm on 30 Sep 2008 It's not exactly Mihir's fault if the majority of footballing news is currently surrounding buy outs of various clubs! Keep up the good work Mihir.....every article that I read of yours informs me and tells me something new....even if it is whithin a continually developing sphere such as these takeovers. This can't be said of all of your contemporaries and it is a quality that I at least appreciate.
Ashley leaves Newcastle in chaos 3:38pm on 03 Sep 2008 As a Man Utd fan, I remember being delighted at Keegan's demise at Newcastle the first time round. In my opinion he quit at the time because he couldn't handle the pressure and this has been subsequently proved by his time with England.

However, I am appalled by the way he has been treated this time round. There have been a few experiments in English football now which have tried to adopt a continental approach to management (think Arenensen at Spurs) and they haven't really worked. I think maybe on the continent it is expected that a manager's head will roll after a bad run or a trophyless season and so a long standing "director of football" maybe adds stability where it would not be otherwise. Simply looking at the records of the bigger clubs shows that in this country at least, its about finding a man for the job and then sticking with him.

Even if you disagree wit this, you cannot argue that the person responsible for transfers should be an inexperienced coach like Wise, who was literally zero experience in big-name signings.

All I ask for is that Fabio is consistent and logical with his choices. I'm not doubting Owen's record, but not making this squad does not mean he is finished. He'll be back.
Capello may regret Owen exclusion 11:38am on 01 Sep 2008 In my opinion, Capello has made a good move.

Owen is not match fit. I believe the England squad is capable of returning with at least 4 points without him and so there is no need to include an unfit Owen. To do so would be a return to "the old boys club" under McClaren whereby certain players were simply undroppable.

We will get the points and not including Owen will be beneficial for the future. Star players need to feel that they have to be playing well to be included, simply turning out for a game or 2 is not good enough.

Owen will be back, no doubt about that. But only when he is fit and banging them in for Newcastle.

England needs a strong manager who sticks to his principles no matter whether you are Michale Owen or Jimmy Bullard.

Of course, it is up to the players in the squad to do the job and provide the platform for the future. I'm not denying that without at least 4 points, Capello will look very foolish indeed.

Keane is a great addittion. You only have to look at the likes of Kuyt and Voronin to know that he was an essential purchase.

But I quite agree, its down the flanks that Liverpool have the problems. I think they will adopt a formation similar to Man Utd's last year. Essentially a forward 3. Torres at the sharp end and Gerrard and Keane behind him getting down the wider positions. This neatly means they avoid playing the likes of Pennant who clearly are not title-winning quality.
