Goldman, Hungary and Regulators 08:03am on 27 Oct 2008 This regulation is exactly what was needed. Yes the consequences will be nasty for some, but without deleveraging we have not solved the problem.

So when will Gordon and Co recognise that and stop encouraging banks to lend at their previously silly rate?

Unless they legislate to stop it, it will happen again and I have collegues that still cant wait to get their hands on a 110% mortgage!

As always fools and their money are easily parted.
Day of reckoning 09:10am on 10 Oct 2008 Scary times and still only just the beginning. Many retailers are heavily borrowed and will start looking like a bad credit risk with sales and the value of other assets falling. With that go failing manufacturing, for similar reasons. 1929 all over again and in spades.

How can we survive, who know and it will be different for every individual. Perhaps we should start looking to trade in skills rather than money, at least swapping an hours labour for a bag of potatoes you know what you are getting.
Armageddon avoided 6:11pm on 08 Oct 2008 Forgive my ignorance but can someone explain how we can get back to growth without one of the following?

1. Using more natural resources - which we will run out of in the not too distant future.
2. Using existing resources more efficiently, not easy when costs in this country are comparitively high and investment is low.
3. Consuming ever more from other countries, giving big balance of payments defecit.
4. Finding a way to use smoke and mirrors to do the financial equivilent of pyrimid selling.

With my limited grasp of economics surely there has to come a point when the economy cannot grow anymore? If so what then as everything appears to be built on contiual growth. Do we need a new non growth model?
Monday morning feeling 09:12am on 06 Oct 2008 So at waht point will the cost of bail out be too big? There must be a point, which I suspect Iceland has reached where it actually would make sense to let it all collapse and start again. Probably result in a lot of pain short term but bail out will be paid for for many generations.
Technology - is the party over? 11:23am on 29 Sep 2008 I really dont see how any business or sector can say it is not effected by the current financial markets. If nothing else all businesses need to sell product in order to pay staff. In the current situation there are fewer people and companies with any cash and hence less spending.

Many technologies have failed over the passed few years to deliver real returns on investment, which is what all companies will be looking for in the current climate add that to the fact that many high tech companies are highly geared and we will see some pain if not casulties.
Bank spanked - who weeps? 5:43pm on 15 Sep 2008 Is it really that the respective governments are no longer prepared to bail out the banks or is it just that in this particular instance there are no retail customers so there is seen to be less direct impact on voters and hence no headlines showing the queues waiting to try and withdraw their life savings?

Sadly I tend to believe that if one of the major retail banks went critical the govenment certainly in the UK would step in still and waste more of my money.

As for learing their lessons yes some banks may but it will take years to work throught the system and those that are in trouble have no real escape route in the short term, so I think this is probably a long way from finished - hold on to your hats!
