Best-ever British display bodes well for London 9:21pm on 03 Aug 2009 Great comment by ShinyDavidHowell, they should just leave these world records behind like they did in the javelin when it changed. I thought all the records were meaningless in this champiosips, emphasised by the rubbish British mens relay team trundling along near the back but just off world record pace.

My stars of the championships were Pellegrini and Payne but that is probably because they are babes.

Not quite sure how Miley and Gandy produce the times they do out of the championships but can't get close to them when it matters.

United_Dreamer is comparing ice dancing with rowing. One is a demanding exciting sport, the other is poor entertainment with subjective scoring and not a sport. Come on UD, you can do better than that.

A special mention for Brazil who have a novel policy of concentrating on the 50 m events. Other than freestyle they are not Olympic events so the standard is weaker. I feel sorry for Tancock that he is the best in the world at an event which isn't in the Olympics.
Michael Johnson answers your questions 9:59pm on 30 Apr 2009 I remember watching Michael Johnson running in Edinburgh on a wet and windy night, it was the first time I had seen him and it was clear he was going to take the sport to another level.

I think his comment above about running under 18 seconds is typo, I think he could have run under 19 seconds if pushed to that level.

There are 2 reasons for watching sport: the first is to see who wins in a competitive event but the second is to marvel at excellence. When watching Johnson it was simply an opportunity to watch a legend, the rest could not win unless he was injured or suffering from food poisoning!
Cabrera's tenacity makes the difference 10:35am on 13 Apr 2009 Not a great article. Cabrera did not make an 8 foot putt to get in the play-off, it was about 3 feet.

I think that American golf looks strong again, after decade of Woods standing alone with Mickelson largely in his shadow, we now have young US players who look like potential champions. I rate the following players:
1. Sean O'Hair;
2. Hunter Mahan; and
3 Antony Kim.

My worry is that Poulter, Rose and Casey all look like top 20 players but seem to have levelled out without any one of them moving to the top table. Padraig needs a tougher course where grinding out pars and scrambling a score is rewarded.

I backed Cabrera in the play off. I remember Kenny Perry choking against Mark Brooks in the PGA and he choked again. Chad Campbell is a bland golfer, there is nothing inspirational about him. He would have been a poor champion. The Duck ia a championship golfer, he nearly won Paul Lawrie's Open and now he has 2 majors which is fitting reward for someone with his talent.

As for McIlroy, a future contender has arrived, whether he is a winner at this level is a question for him to answer. To date, he has looked a nervy player in a finish.

What is the true cost of McLaren's mistake? 09:30am on 04 Apr 2009 Lewis knew that he had let Trulli through. He knew that the team had given false evidence and, significantly, he knew that the result of that evidence was that Jarno Trulli had been given a 25 second penalty and was getting no points when he had done nothing wrong because Lewis had slowed to let him pass.

What worries me is that on the back of that result, Lewis said nothing. I think it is possible to say that he was caught up in the emotion on the day and knew that he deserved third but when the result of not telling the full picture was that Toyota received a crushing penalty which they did not deserve, how could Lewis sit back and allow that to happen. That is cheating and is dishonest. If Lewis was told he could not say anything by Dave Ryan then Dave Ryan should be sacked, not suspended. I find it hard to believe that all senior McLaren management were not made aware of this issue. Lewis should have escalated it to the top level of McLaren if he was being told to cheat. If he did escalate it then the team are cheats and I feel sorry for Lewis. If Lewis did nothing about it when he knew the consequences for Trulli, sadly his reputation is rightfully tarnished.

I watched all the judo and whilst I thought your performance was the strongest by any Britain, I thought it was still too passive. One chance every 4 years and it is better to fail going for it than holding back and then regretting it.

It shows intelligence and maturity to recognise this and I am confident thay you will achieve your dreams in 2012. Look at those such as Paul Goodison and Victoria Pendleton who have used their disappointment from Athens to drive them to gold here.

Sadly I have to say that judo does need an overhaul though as some of your teammates' performances were woeful.
What a weekend! But why stop there? 05:19am on 18 Aug 2008 It would be great to be third in the medals table but the Aussies will throw the kitchen sink at us and you would expect the German and Russian juggernauts to get some momentum this week.

The Aussies have just won the triathlon and have 2 golds in the bag today in the sailing.

I think we will win the 2 cycling sprints and the team pursuit. Events like the maddison are more of a lottery but we have to have a chance as Cav should be fresh.

Looking forward to seeing Tim Brabant, current form suggests he could win.

Reade is clear favourite for the BMX but I remember Wilf O Reilly when short track became an Olympic sport and we were supposed to be dominant at triathlon with Lessing when it became an Olympic sport. Delivering gold is a step up when it matters.

What would be great would be to get a surprise gold. I think every winner has been fairly predictable (Adlington in 400 m and Cooke in the road race were bonuses but not real surprises to those who follow those sports).

Rutherford is a great competitor in the long jump, Tweddle on the bars could deliver.

Goodison is leading his class in sailing and Dempsey and the gorgeous Byony Shaw both still have chances in the wind surfing.

It almost feels like cheating, are the rest of the World not supposed to be a bit better at an Olympics.

Much praise to everyone involved in British cycling, sailing, rowing and swimming (at last). Hopefully the athletes will hold their own this week in a very competitive environment. One gold, four medals would be good. Come on Rutherford in the long jump, he has a great attitude.

End funding for judo. Losing is one thing, just standing around doing nothing on the mat is another. Give their money to cycling - they will use it better!
British girls pay price for relay mistake - but I'd have made it too 12:34pm on 14 Aug 2008 I agree with Doc Kev. It is ridiculous to say you have to be able to compete at that level to be entitled to an opinion. The self proclaimed special one proved what a nonsense that view is in football.

Marshall did bottle it when she was supposed to be world number one 4 years ago. She is now simply not that good, not criticism, just a sad fact.

Adlington would have been just too far back in the final as you can not afford a weak link. I fear the same may happen in the women's 4x4 on the track.

Why was Kaitlin rested from the 100 only to be rested from the relay? Did she go there to be rested or to swim?
Is Phelps really the greatest? 09:01am on 14 Aug 2008 Michael Johnson can not be viewed as the greatest Olympian. Surely the greatest Olympian has to have been unbeaten.

Redgrave lost in 1988 when he only got bronze but then had another event where he got gold. Those were the days, when you had coxed pairs and coxless pairs. Talk about contriving to make different events.

Michael Johnson didn't even make the final of the 200 m in Barcelona. He is the greatest athlete I have seen but with that result he can't be the greatest Olympian. Food poisoning was to blame but for me the minimum standard required to be considered for this title is to be unbeaten in the Olympics. From there it is clearly subjective.
Cooke victory worth the wait 08:23am on 14 Aug 2008 Whilst Cook has always had the talent to win a medal, the strength in depth of British cycling made all the difference this year. Four years ago she spent the race covering moves from the Aussies and others and didn't have enough in the end. Pooley's attack allowed her to sit and let the others close it down this year. She had the legs to cover the key move and thankfully was left in a group of 5 of which 2 were to be blunt rubbish girls who went backwards the moment the pace was injected and the other 2 didn't have a sprint. Cook is a great competitor but in such a random event where it is the equivalent of winnng one stage in the tour de France it is great that she achieved her goal on the big day.

I thought Pooley had won the gold when she finished but the moment the American came over the top in touch she was always likely to power to victory.

I hope the London organisers think carefully about the route for the Olympic road race and time trial. This course has led to great racing but in Cavendish we have the best sprinter. A bland flat course with a sprinters' finish will do fine for him.

The woman's time trial needs to be uphill all the way for Pooley.
