Another council by-election 5:36pm on 06 Jul 2009 Perhaps remarkableSJR should read the article again, it says he has "repaid" not he has been asked to repay as he seems to be suggesting.
Slimming Down Stormont? 1:05pm on 24 Apr 2009 re: the entry above by Stormontspy. The DUP have been proposing a reduction in Departments and MLAs for some considerable time and long before his/her post.

Also the idea that only those who top the poll should be given a Ministerial post is patently ridiculous as that would completely stifle any new talent that a party wishes to promote. Furthermore, perhaps (s)he would like to tell us which Alliance Party MLA topped the poll on the first count and in which constituency: Naomi Long was some 52 votes behind Peter Robinson in East Belfast (and that was in competition with 2 of his party colleagues). I'd like to point out that there are not 29 constituencies. His/her proposal would do nothing to tackle the issue of double-jobbing given that it will be the MPs, as they are better known, who will almost inevitably top any poll.

I'm also interested to note that Stormontspy believes that MLAs and MPs should be hamstrung in being able to do their jobs by not being allowed to have staff. Not particularly good for being able to govern the country.

I have yet to hear any confirmation of these alleged concessions just wild rumour and speculation being generated by the media via Jim Allister. It's not enough simply to use your own fuhrer as a source to attempt to bash the opposition. Enough of the TUV spin, you are beginning to embarrass yourself as much as stormontspy on these pages.

Less traditional_unionist, redflyfisher and stormontspy; more RJ, Suzie and Pan-dora! At least then we can all read some witty and insightful comments, instead of bitty and inciteful dross.
At the Edge of the VAT Debate 2:29pm on 26 Nov 2008 Stormontspy seems to have the most inappropriate username. Surely he should be the one providing the answers rather than flapping around with his little inanities. He clearly doesn't understand how anything works...perhaps he is Kieran McCarthy and is going to advise us that the Government should be paying for our mortagages.

When is a pact, not a pact? 12:12pm on 15 Oct 2008 The TUV and UUP are clearly working on the principle of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".... so Mr Allister, the outspoken opponent of mandatory coalition, the Belfast Agreement, the d'hondt system et al, is now seen to be courting Sir Reg, the architect of such things. As a bystander it shows me just how bitter Mr Allister is and I used to think he had principles.

Reg must have an emperor sized bed for all these political bedfellows: PUP, Conservatives and now TUV.....who next? Plaid Cyrmu? After all poitical ideology doesn't seem to make a jot of difference.

Why no in depth coverage regarding the story behind Basil's "redundancies"?

How can an MLA getting over £70 000 per year not manage his finances effectively?

Is Basil not meant to be the UUP's champion of big business, not the best example to be setting is it?

Can the electorate have faith in a man who cannot effectively manage his finances? As a businessman, I have to generate income as well as pay my outgoings, all Basil had to do was spend...he seems to have done that part especially well.

I wasn't turning the argument around merely pointing out your flawed logic.
You made the point that Catholics weren't welcome in Windsor Park that is clearly complete nonsense and really you should retract that comment.

Your arguments are all over the place really.

Are you really saying the fans should not be allowed to boo opposition players? Should we just sit quietly and politely applaud at approprite moments? Maybe footballers after they score should apoloise for doing so and walk, head bowed, back to the centre circle for fear of being accused of oppressing the opposition.

I take it you weren't at Windsor Park for the England match when the atmosphere was truly electric. An atmosphere created by the fans. As far as I can recall there were no Celtic player playing for England that night.... perhaps the fans of Manchester United and Liverpool are of the view that Mancs and Scousers aren't allowed about the place.

In short, my view is: booing your own players is totally wrong but not booing the opposition.

Back to thread. Booing another teams anthem is wholly wrong. The Scots were totally out of order.

And as for Danny Boy..... is that not a funeral song?
Anthem Angst 10:34am on 26 Aug 2008 In reference to point 5 Spain/Portugal has as much relevance as Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland. You can thank your friends in the Republic for the fact that there are two teams on the island since it was they who couldn't bear to have football administered from Belfast.

As for the booing of Catholic players I haven't noticed any booing of the likes of Baird or Clingan and certainly Michael Hughes was hailed as a hero. Perhaps you are confusing Catholic with Celtic players...and as such are you therefore implying that Celtic refuse to employ Protestant players? Interesting argument.
Anthem Angst 4:33pm on 22 Aug 2008 This is an issue which Northern Ireland fans have discussed at length on the Our Wee Country website long before the Scotland match. Just because the Scots boo the anthem why on earth should we disregard GSTQ?

As for LWDJaymac peddling the all Ireland team: this is just nonsense. How is that all Ireland rugby team doing in a sport that only a handful of countries play? Can I point out that Northern Ireland is doing quite well on its own and there is no reason why should link up with our more poorly performing (and lower ranked) Southern neighbours. I don't hear anyone campaigning for Portugal and Spanish team to unite as an all Iberian peninsula team.
