Murray nears the summit 11:40am on 19 Aug 2009 Andy has done great and I have no doubt that he will reach no 1 in the ATP rankings at some point. I am half Scottish and support Murray just as I supported Henman in his day.

But the bottom line is that history will bracket him with the likes of Marcelo Rios and Pat Rafter should he achieve the number one ranking without adding a Grand Slam title to his name. In other words the achievement would be quickly forgotten.

A Grand Slam title however, with or without the number one ranking would be remembered forever. Only a matter of time in my opinion.
Uh-oh - that's torn it 6:01pm on 18 Jun 2009 Just playing Devil's advocate here but is it not possible that Dean's 'Conan The Barbarian' approach to training may have contributed somewhat towards his string of missed competitions rather than prepared him properly for them?

Maradona lights up Scotland friendly 7:43pm on 11 Nov 2008 Any one who thinks that Maradona (one 'n', not two) was the greatest player ever is obviously too young to have seen Pele. He was the complete footballer.

And he could have done with some protection too - kicked to pieces in two world cups ('62 & '66) simply because he was too good for his average oponents.

Phelps 100m away from matching Spitz's magnificent seven 10:01am on 15 Aug 2008 Not sure that Phelps is going to have it all his own way in the 100m Fly.

Mirolad Cavic has posted a faster time (in the heats) than Phelps has ever swum, and 0.11 faster than Phelps has swum this year.

He is also a lot fresher having pulled out of the Beijing 100m freestyle Semi FInal (despite having the 6th fastest time from the heats) specifically to concentrate on beating Phelps in the 100m fly.

Phelps will definitely finish ahead of Crocker but I just wonder if Cavic might surprise a lot of people and rain on Phelps' parade?

On the other hand this IS Michael Phelps!
What makes Phelps so special? 4:32pm on 13 Aug 2008 Gymnasts also have the opportunity of winning a bag full of medals the way that their competitions are set out. (Team event, overall individual as well as numerous individual pieces of apparatus to master). But because each of pieces of apparatus is different, medals are awarded for each. Surely that is no different to the different disciplines involved with swimming?
What makes Phelps so special? 2:45pm on 13 Aug 2008 How does Mr Phelps decide which races to enter? ? he could in theory get more golds, lazy boy!
For example he is not entered for the 100m fly, but he does swim it in the relay and the same with breast and back and he is not entered for the 50m fly. He can obviously do all the strokes and I can see how one can suit short or long distances but he seems to cover all of the shorter distances in some form.
I have looked at the calendar and there does not seem to be a clash of finals ? is it timing? Is there an established order of preference for events? Is it to concentrate on ?blue ribbon? events?

You seem a little confused! Phelps is entered for the 100m fly and will have to get to the wall ahead of his teammate Ian Crocker if he wants to win that particular gold. Also he is not entered for the 50m fly because there isn't one!

You don't just pick and choose what you might like to enter, you have to finish 1st or 2nd in the US trials to be selected for an individual event at the games. The US swimming coaches can pick from the team in Beijing who will compete in the relays.

Oh and it is Blue Riband - not Blue Ribbon!
