Beijing, over and out - follow that, London! 04:47am on 26 Aug 2008 I hope that in 2012 London will not try to compete with what Beijing has done. Personally there was too much show in the opening and closing ceremonies. All very nice, but how could it be topped. It can't. If money is spent instead elsewhere like on your athletes and expand on the wonderful performances of your athletes in Beijing, in heading to London, then that will be worth it. After all, honestly, the games are about the Athletes and not focusing so much opening and closing ceremonies.

In my view has to go to the written off Aussie girls in the 4 x 200 womens relay.
Written off and scoffed at by the daily mail and coming home to win in a world record time. Now that was sweet!
GB pedal-powers to success 09:31am on 21 Aug 2008 I am an aussie and thank goodness here at least there is little or any nastiness and insults from Aussies and Brits.
I think all athletes have done a brilliant job from both Australia and Great Britain. I do not care who is top of the medal tally. I care about seeing athletes doing their best and some performances from all around the world have moved me to tears.
I admired particularly the gutsy performance by Mr Davies in the 10km swim. If was great to see him get a silver medal after not medalling in the 1500m freestyle.
Why armchair spectators have to jibe at each other is beyond my understanding. Just enjoy the olympics, and be happy for GB getting the medal tally they deserve. Well done GB!!!!

Again I will comment, as an aussie..Well done, Great Britain. I have noticed that not one British person has noted that there are Aussies who applaud your wins, admire the athletes who won gold silver and bronze medals for team GB, and have commented so here. Instead, these comments are overlooked in the eagerness to sling another insult about aussies. Just who are these whinging Aussies anyway!. The way the comments here are posted, one would think all 21 million of us are whining about losing.
This isnt so.
I have to wonder though about expats living here in OZ as they are the ones who cannot help snipe at us Aussies whenever they get a chance. I know as I have a number of them in my family and I found its just best to shut up around them, much as I love them.

you DON'T thrash your favourite countries time after time as you tried to point out. A bit of an exaggeration there, I think.
I am an aussie and appear to be in a minority where it comes to admiring the British for your stupendous medal tally so far. Those wonderful cycling results and I was thrilled when Rebeccah Adlington not only won the 800 metres freestyle but broke the longest standing swimming record left. I really do not see the point of dissing each other like this. Great britain has been down the medal tally for a lot of olympics and I am very pleased to see you come up and yes, over us. It will boost the interest for 2012 and it will make us Aussies and our government realise that if much the same result as what the Aussies have acheived in Beijing or better will need one hell of a lot more injection of money.

I think its great!. I am an aussie and although I am despondent that our cyclists did not do at all well, I am hoping it will be a wakeup call to show that more money needs to be spent in cycling if Australia does not want a repeat of this in 2012.

Maybe half your medals did come from cycling but then so did half our medals come from swimming.
Lose interest in the sport? No, that wont happen. You british will now have an enormous interest in it especially if it means that a repeat perfomance can happen in 4 years on your own home ground. Us Aussies and other countires will be more interested as they will wish to improve themselves. So its all good.
Phelps, Mellouli and the best swimmers in Europe 00:20am on 18 Aug 2008 The Aussies actually performed as well as ever, but like everyone else looked ordinary compared to Michael Phelps.
All up they got 6 gold 6 silver and 8 bronze, whereas the USA received 12 gold, 9 silver and 10 bronze, most of the gold won by Michael Phelps. The Americans very nearly lost that last gold medal in the mens medley relay to Australia and that was with Michael swimming.
The Australian women still have the strongest team in the world, and the men are slowly recovering from the shock of losing Ian Thorpe and found they have to start pulling their finger out instead of relying on him to win.
As for money in swimming, very few of our Aussie swimmers get a lot of money, believe it or not.. Only the very few who are multiple medal winners and are reasonable looking get sponsors.
Of a 46 strong team sent to Beijing, you are looking at around 6 or 7 who get the good money, the rest struggle. In Athens 2004, Petria Thomas who was a multiple medal winner and a wonderful olympian who had been on the team for successive olympics actually left the sport because she was so broke and no matter how many medal she had won not one sponsor did she get, all because she wasnt blonde and marketable. Between Athens and Beijing, there were fewer spnsors because it was said there were too many good swimmers in the womens team, and it was er ho hum.
Now though Stephanie Rice has become the sponsors dream

What makes Phelps so special? 12:33pm on 13 Aug 2008 If Michael achieves what he has set himself out to do in Beijing, then what is left for him?

Looking at the stats also of the American swim team, I fear they are falling into the same hole that the Australian male team did. Unwittingly the team starts to rely on one person to bring home the bacon. The Australians did it to Ian Thorpe and when he retired, there was only Grant hackett left to swim comparably with the rest of the world. If you take Michael out of the current team USA's equation you will see that so far they have only one gold medal in the pool - Aaron peirsol, and possibly one gold medal from their 4 x 200 mens freestyle relay from the men, and this is halfway through the meet. They have only one silver medal and that was also in the same event that Aaron Peirsol took the gold. So where are all their other men swimmers? I often wonder how one can train and train day in day out month in month out year in year out if all you are going to achieve at the end is a silver medal behind Michael Phelps. Perhaps inadvertantly michael has scared off some of his own countryman to become olympians to stand on the podium and take a gold.
