Man Utd pile on agony for Wenger 2:42pm on 06 May 2009 Man Utd looked very good last night despite (in my opinion) not hitting top gear...an ominous sign indeed for either my team Chelsea, or Barcelona. Everyone's saying Barca are the best team in Europe, especially as they demolished Real in their own backyard last weekend, but I'm not convinced they are, I think United are, and Chelsea or Barca are going to have to be at the very top of their game to win the Champions league.

I should be pleased that Arsenal are out of the competition (and I am!)but the fact is that United made Arsenal look ordinary last night. I wouldn't say it was men against boys, but Arsenal looked like a mid table team rather than a top 4 one. They looked very subdued last night, and whereas Chelsea and Liverpool would have come out in the second half rejuvenated, the Arsenal players looked as thhough they knew the game was up by half time. Where were they in the second half? - apart from Van persie's goal they did precious little for the rest of the game.

Phil, I think your observations are spot on...and some of the Arsenal fans on here criticising you need a reality check. The gulf in class between the two clubs is the widest I've seen in a long time. They may have brushed Villa aside this season but they may not be so lucky next season, particularly if Wenger continues his virtual no spend policy. If Villa hang on to their best players this summer AND add a few more decent players then Arsenal may be in trouble nxt season unless they spend abit more in the summer. Arsenal fans also need to acknowlwdge that Villa (while inexperienced in Europe) are an emerging force in English football that need to be taken seriously rather than dismissed casually as I get the impression some gooners are doing.

...and then there's City - when they eventually get a decent team together who are more consistent it could make the Premiership alittle more unpredictable.

For now though 'Come on Chelsea!'...let's go one better than last year - and Arsenal, and this time ACTUALLY win the competition.
England still need Owen 12:35pm on 30 Mar 2009 I don't think Capello has abandoned Owen for good, but I think it's become clear that with people like Agbonlahor around - who has pace to burn and some, Owen is going to find it harder to 'walk' straight into the team, even if playing well. Another thing is that Owen should definitely leave Newcastle this summer regardless of whether they stay up or not. Staying at Newcastle is not helping matters. I fhe joined City or Everton I think Capello might just change his view about Owen.
Rooney and Gerrard make Fabio smile 12:19pm on 30 Mar 2009 Yes, England played well but the game was too one-sided to be considered a decent match. Once again sections of the football media are going overboard lavishing praise on England. Let's not forget this is just a group game (a WC qualifier) nothing more. England need to keep their heads down more and just get on with it without the need for a fanfare after every single victory. We didn't win anything, only gained three points. At least wait til after Wednesday's result against Ukraine. This will be a trickly match for England and no walk in the park like the Slovakia game was. If we'd beaten say Spain or France 4-0 then, yes, abit of fanfare would be good but not for Slovakia - come on.

Another thing, the new kit looks good and very minimalist. But it seems a tad extravagant for each footballer to have a tailormade kit for them especially given the current economic crisis. Yet another example of how out of synch football is with reality ( e.g. what's going on in the world economically). A nice touch inmore prosperous times but abit OTT right now.
The final frontier 12:23pm on 17 Feb 2009 Scolari will be back...in the Premiership, and I think I know where he might end up.............Manchester City.

Much as I like and admire Mark Hughes as a manager, I just don't think he'll get the time ne needs to fashion a City side capable of breaking into the top 4. They may not get a UEFA spot for next season either as they are just not consistent enough. I think the only way they (City) can hang on to Robinho ( and to a lesser extent, Jo) is if they make Scolari their next boss. There is no way that Robinho will still be at City next season unless they are playing in Europe - and I don't think they will be. But if they get Scolari then players like Robihno may just be persuaded to forgo a season of European football because Scolari would be at the helm.

I'm not wanting Hughes to go but I think the sheikh is keeping tabs on Scolari and is waitingfor the right moment. Hughes should have stayed at Blackburn as I believe they (Blacknurn) would be pushing clubs like Everton for a Uefa place, instead Rovers have gone backwards since Hughes left.
Di Stefano the greatest 10:48pm on 09 Feb 2009 Anyone remeber that goal Henry scored against Newcastle about six years ago where he swivelled round from far out on the left hand side of the pitch and scored without even looking at where the ball was going? now how many players past and present could have scored a goal like that - amazing wasn't the word ... I don't know what is!.

Van Basten has to be one of the best ever forwards.
Mourinho will relish Man Utd test 7:42pm on 19 Dec 2008 Sorry made a blunder saying that Liverpool AND Real would both go through... when they're playing each other! so it's Liverpool for me. You could look at this tie in several ways: Benitez v Ramos, Torres (ex-atletico v their bitter rivals) , Spanish no. 1 GK v Spanish no.2 GK or Casillas against Reina - so there's more to this match than alot of people think.

What do people think about the prospects for our clubs (English) in the UEFA cup? Have all of them reached as far as they'll get?
Mourinho will relish Man Utd test 6:22pm on 19 Dec 2008 Real Madrid will continue to look great on paper but fail to deliver on the pitch. If they get through, I can't see them going further than the QF stage.
Mourinho will relish Man Utd test 6:19pm on 19 Dec 2008 Yes, I can see an upset - if one big club knocking another one out can be called such a thing. Man Utd fans will know how shrewd and tactically aware Mourinho is from his time with Chelsea.

Mourinho is also more than a match for Fergies 'mind games' and I remember on several occasions his mind games back-fired and left him with egg on his face. I can see Inter beating Utd. Think it will be a very tight affair with Inter winning 2-1 in the san siro while the 2nd leg will end up 2-2 with Inter going through 4-3 on aggregate. Undersetimate Mourinho at your peril.

Just glad Chelsea have avoided him ( for now?). Chelsea should beat Juve as Juve aren't as good a team as Inter. Inter are the best team in Italy - the league table dosen't lie. They'd have buried Pompey at Fratton park not left it to the last five minutes like Milan.

Think Liverpool will go through but Arsenal are heading for disaster. Roma may not be a great team but they're better than Arsenal right now.
Big Sam is back 8:41pm on 17 Dec 2008 Geordiegibo - Rovers may have less fans than Newcastle but at least they aren't a National joke. ....and why is it that Newcastle haven't found a buyer to take over from Mike Ashley? is it because the of the fans and the fact that many take obsession abit too far. Inshort their behaviour has scared off any prospective buyer in case they're linched by a baying mob if results are quite to their liking.
Big Sam is back 6:03pm on 17 Dec 2008 Allardyce not making it at Newcastle was a blessing in disguise. While all is quiet on Tyneside at the moment I'm sure the club aren't too far away from the next calamity.

Sure he'll do just fine with Rovers while Newcastle fans will looking on with some envy at Blacburns 'spurs style revival' while they wave goodbye to the Premiership minus Owen.
