China delivers an Olympics like no other 09:34am on 24 Aug 2008 China is not an aggressive nation and the authoritarian regime is the necessary regime for ruling the biggest poulation in the world. The USA/Britain and Japan for example are far more aggressive than Chbina in their military history. If China had western democracy it would never be the magnificent country that it is and with the most wonderful people who are respectful, kind and put their talents to the best use. The Olympics have been brilliant because of the inherent qualities of the Chinese nation - yes, the world is jealous; especially the educated academics who will make the most noise about human rights. But in truth they are contradicting themselves -because how could such a so called 'repressive regime' produce so much beauty and such a great welcome to the rest of the world? The British team did well and I do believe the British can learn a lot from the Chinese as Britain is in great need of a lot more order and 'push'. The class system in Britain has made every sport unaccessible for most of the poorest kids in Britain - call that a democracy? They have done very well in this Olympics and long may it continue - most sports people rise above petty nastiness and the true human connection shows through sport.
Was this swimming or boxing? 08:05am on 21 Aug 2008 Just read about that Welsh boy who won the silver and threw a bottle of water over a female Chinese official who was trying to rush him to the medal presentation - how rude of him and what a disgrace. His medal is tainted by his boorish behaviour. Typical British youth behaviour.
Liu Xiang out 3:51pm on 18 Aug 2008 oh of course the under lying message of this typical BBC response it trying to make it seem ominous or something fishy going on. It is laughable what you British journalists try to cook up about China. Fact of the matter is, he really wanted to race, really spent 4 years preparing and in true Chinese character, came out to race but could not do to bone problem that he was born with. China devastated - he is a national hero. It is like your Beckham breaks a leg and can never play again.
Thunder Bolt creates shockwaves 10:33am on 17 Aug 2008 Bolt's stride is massive - not only is he fast and strong - he seems to have to legs of a giant taking giant leaps across the earth - I think he could go as fast as under 9 secs; he just seems to be a wonder of nature - super human and really really laid back and natural. It will take a long time to beat him; I would feel over whelmed by his physical prowess if i was another runner.
Beckham to appear at closing ceremony on top of a London bus 08:19am on 15 Aug 2008 Why do we have to celebrate pop culture and celebrity culture as landmark symbols of our country and heritage? It is ridiculous and who is making these decisions? Obviously people who do not have an inkling about our history. It may not be 'cool' but some of our military bands and displays are amazing and having asked Chinese people what they think Britain is famous for - they all say 'military (wanting to take over the world). Then there is Shakespeare, regional things like Scottish dancing/Welsh male choirs etc etc- breakdancing? That's American? Beckham on a bus? What is he? Our national symbol of what?
Reporting the Games 11:52pm on 08 Aug 2008 I am furious with Newsnight for inviting that narrow minded intellectual Jonathon Mirsky on to comment about the Olympics Opening Ceremony. Of course it was a beautiful and fascinating piece of work and very aesthetically crafted. What does this Mirsky say? He compares it to a Nazi parade. HOW DARE HE! Why are western people allowed to insult China like this? Is he aware of what the Nazi's did? How can he make such a comparison? I tell you why - he hates China and he is a poisoness little bigot. I very much admired the British/Chinese guests who kept their cool and answered him intelligently but of course he was not listening. He was just consumed with bigotry and hatred towards this nation and living with an idea of China that does not exist. He kept on saying 'they want us to believe in all this pretence and lies' who is THEY? He does not realise that 'THEY' are the so called 'oppressed' people (ha ha they do not exist), the thousands of free Chinese people who came to the stadium to watch the event and the others who may have performed etc etc. These so called 'oppressed ' people looked very happy to the rest of the world. So who is 'THEY' oh I know, it is the Chinese nation which Mirsky is very ignorant of and thinks he understands. Why did Newsnight have such a poisoness critic on - he was insulting.
