Three years in China 2:44pm on 07 Jul 2009 James, I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this blog - you will be missed!! It feels like I've been on a journey with you - you the English chap in Beijing, me the Chinese girl in England.

Please start a new blog whereever you're dispatched to. I'll make an effort to read it!

Conflict of party and private lifestyles 01:00am on 11 Jun 2009 Apparently he was expelled from Ox? And missing from James' report is that BoGG was the first Chinese student at Harrow and a excellent one too(winning scholarships and publishing a book)...

I echo most people above, he's just a young boy enjoying his youth. Hopefully not on the hard earned money of the Chinese peasants!!

Why not? What did you expect? Why not be optimistic? The link between "China" and "superpower" has been used quite often in the western media, no?

Please do me a favour and lets not drag out the history books. China has always been a peaceful country. The Confucian values that underlie Chinese society is harmony (the "he" in hepingjueqi). (I hate compare, but) contrast the Chinese military history to that any other nation: UK, Germany, Japan, USA, India yada yada... which country has its hands clean? I understand that you're pointing the finger at Tibet (and Taiwan), but please do not merge the 5000 years of Chinese history with that of the last 50 years. And please regard the Chinese people and Chinese government as separate entities. I morn for the loss of traditional values in modern China and make no excuse for the brutal and unjust actions by the usurpers of today.

On another note, Senlin, I read some of your other posts where you talked about racism in China. I'm sincerely sorry of your experiences and hope you can see beyond it all. I can also assure you that I've had more than my fair share of racial abuse hurled at me when I moved to Manchester at 10 years old.

This sounds rather spiteful. The draught in Northern China is secondary to a natural disaster. Not karma.

Chinese politicians always seem so distant, almost inhumane. They all wear the same suit, speak with the same tone of voice, choose words from the same text book... meeting and shake hands with foreign politicians is all they seem to do. All except for Wen (and Jiang - who is simply bizzare). To me, he feels like a grandad, generally a really nice person who cared about people beyond the red walls.

I'd ask him about 64, why not? I'm sure he has a ready-made-CCP-approved-template in answer. Whatever that may be and (call me naive) I feel Wen is a sincere man, and certainly a good man. He (nor Hu) cannot change China on his own, but they can definitely make small changes for fruition in the years and years ahead... sorry for sounding preachy, I shall shut up.

Taking the new year train 00:24am on 17 Jan 2009 I hope you took a jam jar - theres hot water on board if you're lucky enough to find some before it disappears. Saying that though, I wouldn't drink to minimize the need to visit the lavatory. Not nice experience.
