Turning down Newcastle 2:30pm on 10 Aug 2009 A reasonable football blog, spoiled by inane ramblings about some gentlemans pastime. As soon as the wicket talk started, I scanned the rest to see if it ended.

Stately Perez defends big spending 2:43pm on 17 Jul 2009 Ok so perhaps I haven't watched the interview, but I'd at least expect the blog to deliver on the promised headline.

Nowhere in this body of text does Perez defend his spending policy. This is just a brief summary of a conversation, which ultimately suggests that Mr Bose was won over by Sr Perez charm more than anything else.

Its got more than a whiff of Chick Young and David Murray about it...
The fine tuning of pre-season 11:47am on 01 Jul 2009 I find it quite interesting reading alot of this pre-season stuff recently, that many people are referring to the 'running up the steepest hill' theory as dated and perhaps old school.

Just 6 weeks ago Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga for the first time under Felix Magath, who had a custom built running hill created at their training ground for this exact purpose. Magath attributed VFL's late season surge to their superior fitness levels, aided in no small part by his preseason schedule and his now famous hill.

Using science to get players fit is all well and good, but perhaps the discipline and mental strength garnered from gruelling pre season schedules has a greater impact on performance.

Surely the loss of Rafael Marquez would have had a bigger impact no?

Sven seems to bring a surge of improvement to any side he manages, which then levels out to being slightly better than what went before.

Probably wouldnt get anyone relegated. Doubtful whether sustained success would be on the cards either all the same.
Remembering my international heyday 09:43am on 03 Apr 2009 Great point about Schoolboys Gavin - there have been several examples of players 'destined' for big things, only to disappear. A recent example would be Andy Bagshaw, the Scottish Schoolboy who ran rings around Micah Richards in the Victory Shield, was voted player of the tournament and finished joint top scorer as well if I recall correctly.

Where are those two players now? Richards - England International, playing regularly at the richest club in the world. Bagshaw - struggling to get a game and part-time at 2nd Division Peterhead...

Strange how things turn out.

At least there's something here to have a thoughtful discussion about! I think Gordon has proven to be worthy of keeping the jersey. Fair enough he hasnt played the same amount of European games at club level, but the same argument can be used with McGregor at international level. When both were fit and first choice at their clubs, Gordon was first choice for Scotland. In the goalkeeping position, unless there is a dramatic difference in abilities between two keepers, the general rule of thumb seems to be that if you have the jersey - its yours to lose. Gordon lost the jersey at Sunderland due to injury, not loss of form, and Fulop has been treated fairly by Sbragia with respect to keeping his place. While I think McGregor has been a consistently good goalkeeper over the last 3 seasons, I dont think Gordon has done anything wrong for Scotland and doesnt deserve to lose his place.

Its all immaterial anyhow - Burley has announced the McGregor will play. I dont see a problem with that ability wise, both are fine keepers, but I think Gordon has proven his worth to Scotland as a goalkeeper.
Batman, Robben and Scotland 10:19am on 24 Mar 2009 Burley not picking Boyd because he wasnt getting picked regularly for Rangers is not the full story. There were 5 strikers in the squad, and out of the five, Boyd had played the least amount of first team football at that stage of the season. Iwelumo was on a fine run of form, playing and scoring regularly and was given the nod on that basis. Hindsight tells us that Burley got that one wrong but what happened was unimaginable.

The cases of Gordon and Hutton are very different to Boyd. Sure they are not playing regularly, but they have proven in the past to be the best players we have in those positions and merit selection on that basis.

George Burley is the Scotland manager, nobody else. He will stand or fall by the decisions he makes. If he wants to play certain players he shouldn't have to justify it to the media, who will eventually turn it around and throw any reasoning he has back in his face.

We can still rise now...
