SPOTY 2009 starts to take shape 10:37pm on 20 Oct 2009 If SPOTY is going to just be an awards show like it has been for the last few years is there any chance we could have an actual sports review of the year somewhere in the schedules?
Before the fame, the sporting brilliance 4:36pm on 18 Aug 2009 Fantastic news about Michael Johnson being signed up by the BBC for the 2012 Olympics already. In my view he is the best pundit on any sport there is.

As far as the "celebrity" issue goes I think the BBC have tended to strike a good balance between broadcasters and ex competitors.

Personally I've always prefered the presenting and commentary left to broadcasters and the analysis left to the ex competitors. However there are of course exceptions to this with people like Andy Jameson and Adrian Moorhouse being fantastic on the BBC's Swimming coverage in the commentary roles in my opinion.

Also as others have mentioned before me can we please not have Huw Edwards on the Opening Ceremony again.

In terms of featuring more sport during the show this could easily be achieved in the last few years if the elements of the show like Mark Ramprakash dancing, Zak Purchase playing the saxaphone and James Toseland playing the piano hadn't been included.

When you give each of the SPOTY contenders approximately five minutes each in a little feature and it probably takes about 5 minutes to hand out each award you're probably only left with 30 minutes of a 2 hours show to actually review the sporting year so to give over some of that time Sportsmen doing none sporting things does seem like a huge waste to me.
The inside track on Inside Sport 6:21pm on 15 Apr 2009 I felt that this weeks show was better than the first as Agnew and Parrot are more insightful and forthcoming in there opinions that Hansen and Henman.

One thing I found odd though was in the week building up to the world snooker championships you decided to interview a player who won't even be competing there. Jimmy White is one of sports great characters but I would be surprised if many people found out anything that we didnt know already about him from the interview.

In terms of the journalists I'm in favour of having them back. Although rather than going back to just using the original trio of Bunce, Kelly and Livesey you might cast the net wider so you do actually have a journalist who specifically covers the sport that will be discussed in that weeks show.
Monday night is Inside Sport night 2:36pm on 07 Apr 2009 I enjoyed the features last night but was dissapointed with the studio discussion. At times it appeared that Hansen and Henman were being interviewed rather than there to give there opinions on the subjects featured. I would hope that we will see a return to the journalistic input later in the series as I have felt that was what always gave Inside Sport its different feel as opposed to most sports shows where its always ex professionals commenting.
Monday night is Inside Sport night 6:07pm on 27 Mar 2009 "All I'd say is that my aim with this show is to look at issues and personalities and reflect and produce a programme in a lively way that will interest not just the sportsfan but a cross section of the audience..."

This is why I'm becoming more and more disillusioned with sports coverage on the BBC.

Why do sports programs have to appeal to a cross section of the audience?

Can they not just be made for people that are interested in sport.

With regards to previewing upcoming sporting events in other output such as the One Show could it be advertised more widely that it would be included in shows like that. Last year I was expecting to see in the listings a Friday night Grand National Preview as we have for aslong as I can remember. It wasn't there so I assumed the BBC had just cut any sort of preview. Reading one of your responses to this blog you mentioned that Claire Balding did various reports on the National in the one show which may well have made it watched by a wider audience but it meant it was totally missed by someone like me who whilst being interested in the Grand National never watches the One Show.
Ski Sunday returns 12:34pm on 11 Jan 2009 Some people seem to be making a comparison between last years Ski Sunday and Top Gear and I can understand why.

However the thing is Top Gear is not and never will be a sports show. Would the BBC get away with covering Formula One by showing 10 minutes of highlights in the middle of Top Gear. No they wouldn't so I don't see why winter sports should be covered like that.

The last series really did have the feel of being two shows squeezed together to make one and largely to the detriment of the actual sports action with sometimes as little as 10 minutes actual sport being shown in a 60 minute show.

In response to your comment about approval ratings can I ask what people make up the representative panel?

This may just be the opinion of the people that i work with but those of us that regularly play or watch sport are becoming more disenchanted with the show and those that aren't regular viewers or participants are enjoying it more. One of the girls I work with said she only watched it because her boyfriend had it on but "wasn't it great when they had that bit with the guy playing the saxaphone".

The "sporty" ones amongst us thought what was the point of that as all it was was another arty montage set to music that took up 5 unnecesary minutes.

Now I've come to the point where I understand that BBC Sport has to appeal to the main stream to justify a primetime slot on sunday night for a show but for those of us sports fans who want a genuine review of the sporting year can we please have one maybe on BBC2 on a Sunday afternoon over the festive period or something like that.
