Exactly. And they have been supported using tax payer money - my money. Which is completely inappropriate for industries in long term decline due to the cost base. Using tax payer money for the bank bailout isnt much better, but the big difference is that it is (hopefully) short term, and incorporates ownership and some return on the tax payer investment.

Subsidising manufacturing in perpetuity, as you suggest should have happened, would not in my view have been a good use of my taxpayer pound

We have no manufacturing (coal, steel, ships, cars, as you put it) because the unions priced themselves out of the market. All these things can be made cheaper elsewhere.

Or maybe you were suggesting that these industries be subsidised? Well, that would be using taxpayers money, right? Why should I have contributed, as a taxpayer, toward the subsidisation of loss making manufacturing industries? That is no better than me 'bailing out' the banks.

Why our banks are vulnerable 1:46pm on 02 Oct 2008 Its all very easy to blame the bankers - everyone looks for someone to blame when the edifice comes crashing down. But the root cause of the whole problem was the insatiable greed of the middle classes of the Anglo Saxon economies. Young people who wanted to skip the 1st rung of the property ladder and borrow 6 or 7 times their salary to get a bigger 2 bedroom apartment They knew they were being greedy, and there is a lot of denial going on. I was one of them, and knew full well that I was stretching myself. And what about all those older middle class professionals who werent happy with their money in the bank - they wanted it in property funds or levered investment vehicles.

There was insatiable demand from the greedy middle classes to get rich quick. And an unlimited amount of supply of the necessary finance from the banks. Put them both together, and we are where we are. It was the regulator and the govenment's job to stand between those 2 powerful forces, and they failed.

No-one was complaining when the going was good, and the city was generating revenue that benefitted the whole country. And now the poor suffer, while the middle classes live in denial and blame anyone else other than themselves
Meltdown Monday 9:15pm on 15 Sep 2008 Everyone blames the bankers, but they are only partly culpable. What about the people who borrowed high salary multiples, well above their means, knowing they would struggle to afford repayments, just so they could skip the 1st rung of the property ladder that all our parents had to go through. It takes two to tango - a lender AND a borrower!!

And what about all those people who put money into funds and other instruments because they were greedy beyond the yield that their savings account could provide.

It was collective greed from both the bankers AND the ordinary man on the street that got us into this mess. The politicians could have stopped it, but did not have the will to tell the public that they couldn't have it so good any more.
A missed opportunity for GB archers 8:39pm on 25 Aug 2008 I had never watched archery before, and knew nothing about it, but watching the girls miss out on the medal was one of the most agonising and memorable moments of the games for me. I genuinely hope they bounce back
Goodnight Beijing 9:00pm on 24 Aug 2008 Why does everyone keep moaning about our success being in 'elitist' sports. It is absolute rubbish! Every reasonably sized town has at a cycling club, and everywhere near a reasonably sized body of water has a rowing and a sailing club! I would be surprised if there are very many people in the UK who live more than a few miles away from a place where they can practice these so called 'elite' sports. It seems that people are just scared or cant be bothered to try something new, so they cop out and call it 'elitist'. Well, those people are welcome to their Premiership football!!

Move over Murray, these Games ain't for you 9:25pm on 11 Aug 2008 What annoys me the most about the inclusion of non-Olympic sports (to use the quite appropriate definition in the article) is that they are included at the expense of other sports. The IOC manage the olympics to a certain number of competitors that are allocated between sports. The numbers in rowing, for example, are severely cut back compared to the world championships due to this quota (note only 2 or 3 heats of 4 crews in eights and fours - there are double that number at the world championships, and also more events). I am sure it is the same for many other olympic sports. Successful athletes (in one case this year, a rowing world silver medallist) miss the Olympics because of this. Just so that uninterested tennis players or footballers can go to an event that they don't really care about

However, leaving that aside, i dont think the quote would have got this attention had it been aimed at a 24 year old partner, rather than a 14 year old. The age shouldnt make any difference. Daley is an olympian, a top class sportsman, and he should be able to handle anything that is said to him in the context of his sport. Blake shouldnt be beaten up about what he said just because the subject of his comments was 14 years old. The same goes for the photos and other aspects of Tom Daley's exposure that people are complaining about. He has put himself out there, and shouldnt be treated differently to any other athlete
