In fact, Corus was acquired by India's steel maker Tata a few years back before the start of the global credit crunch. I haven't seen the news piece you are referring to, but I doubt the CEO would want to move jobs to China instead of his home country, India.

Someone should send those bank bosses to jail for charging outrageous fees on overdrafts. Without the taxpayers, most of them wouldn't have a business to run! In Canada, banks charge a flat fee of $5 every time a customer uses the overdraft service on their regular chequing account. How can similar high street banks in England get away with charging £25 per day?

Tuesday 24 November 2009 10:19pm on 24 Nov 2009 I saw a posting from BBC Have Your Say which I think sums up the scandalous incompetence of police officers in England pretty well. A father, clearly distressed, was writing about his experience reporting crimes to the police about the repeated incidents, in which his disabled son was bullied by their neighbourhood street gangs. The officer told him that ‘his son was being too sensitive sometimes’, and that since they don’t know where the bullies lived, the police couldn’t do anything about it. Furthermore, the police officer said if his son decided to throw a brick back at his attackers, he could be arrested for physical assault. Is this the kind of legal institution to whom you would entrust your DNA? No!

Before Chairman Mao and his red army invaded Tibet, Tibet had already belonged to the old Republic of China (established in 1911) for a long time, and before that it was Manchu, or what is more commonly known as Qing Dynasty. In fact, up until 1949, China was a democracy, with the Nationalist and Communist basically sharing power. But Chairman Mao overtook control of the government after winning the civil war with the help of the Soviets, and created People’s Republic of China we know today. The Nationalists on the other hand, fled to Taiwan and continued its reign of the old Republic of China from there.

Let’s take Britain for example –
Suppose David Cameron invaded Westminster with the backing of the army, and forced Gordon Brown and the Labour party to go into exile in France. Then Wales declared independent, refusing to be ruled by the new authoritarian country/government established by David Cameron. Seeing this, the Tories sent in the army forces to Wales, conquered opposition by force, thus uniting GB again. Now, would you say Wales is not part of Britain, because it declared independence temporarily in between a change of power at the head of government? I know this is a ridiculous example, but it helps explain my point.

Even though China (PRC) was established in 1949, Chairman Mao’s military campaign went on for a few years after that. They tried to stop the nationalists from settling in Taiwan, went into Tibet, while putting out fire elsewhere. All in all, it was a pretty unstable period for the whole country.

If you go to the dedicated checking points in Customs at Heathrow airport, where they receive and inspect people who have to apply for a visa to come to the UK, chances are you will see loads of heads lining up in a queue that often goes on to several hundred yards on a normal day. The dreadful long queue, which I had the pleasure to encounter myself, used to coincide with term start dates (e.g. September, January), but in recent years, peak seasons have literally turned into all year round, thus mounting huge pressure on those immigration officers working at the airport, and to equally frustrated travelers. It leads a sensible person to wonder what types of schools some of these so called students are attending, which allow them to arrive and start their courses in the middle of the term. It is also not surprising that Labour admitted to not interviewing every candidate upon arrival in to the country. Even fools can see the reason - they simply don’t have the time or resources to do so.

Sometimes I think the legal system here is a bit like a coffee maker – the good coffee pours out, but the nasty residuals are left behind, in that it’s very effective at catching out good people, but shockingly useless to spot those who actively seek to exploit the system. The end result is that over time, the system is retaining a greater proportion of cheaters and scoundrels, who manage to stay in stealth and work their way into slowly legitimizing their bogus immigration status.
Wednesday 11 November 2009 1:59pm on 12 Nov 2009 On this week’s Politics Pen, I was a little disappointed to see that one viewer’s suggestion of imposing a one off tax on bankers’ bonuses at 90% was turned down by the judges. Lord Digby Jones was only half right - bonus payments for this year have not been canceled at these banks but merely delayed for a few years (presumably until the economy picks up). Since it is bad policy to introduce retrospective taxing, why not introduce the new tax rule now, so as to ensure any cash bonuses to be postponed by the banks in this manner will be properly taxed when they come into force at a future date?

On the argument that some banks didn’t need bailing out by the taxpayers, and so taxing bonuses wouldn’t be fair on them -
Had we allowed Northern Rock and the other banks to fail, who is to say for sure that its knock-on effects wouldn’t have thrown all the other solvent banks out of balance? At the height of the credit crunch, inter-bank lending completely froze up; what were the bank executives at HSBC and Barclays supposed to do about financing if it weren’t for government interventions? The repeated capital injections into the financial system and the treasury backed loan guarantee schemes instigated by the government, both of which the surviving banks have been benefiting hugely from - how is that so different from a direct bailout?

Immigration Debate

Tighter controls on immigration will no doubt be the vote winner in the coming election next May. It took them long enough, but NuLabour has finally realized this. On an off point, I happen to think the quality of immigrants is as important as the quantity. If the government changes the composition of the immigrant intake, say, from mainly skills type to investment type, contrary to the economic migrants who come to work in the country and therefore take up existing jobs in the economy, investment immigrant will build new enterprises and create new jobs. This can help alleviate the pressure of immigrants on the local job markets.

EU Presidency

This is purely my speculation - but could it be that the Conservative Party had made a deal with some European party leaders not to hold a post-ratification referendum on the Lisbon Treaty if elected into government next year, in exchange for those party leaders’ joint support to oppose Mr Blair’s candidacy for EU president? Otherwise, why on earth did those European bureaucrats seem so concerned about upsetting the incoming Tory party, whose alliance in the sad little far right grouping of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) has held little power and influence in the European Council to date, that they almost unanimously decided to withdraw their vocal support for Tony Blair's election bid, over the course of last week?
