Must-have plants 9:52pm on 03 Apr 2009 I'm amazed that some people have completely missed the point of what I consider to be a brilliant first show of the new season of Gardeners World. For the first time EVER the programme really seems to have a modern down to earth approach (we don't all have big posh gardens like Berryfields), it has a clear and logical structure and a real 'back to basics' feel that so many of us new, young eager to learn gardeners really need at this time! Well done everyone - I am really inspired to get stuck into my garden and I'm really glad to have your guidance on a weekly basis. Keep up the good work and please don't listen to those out of date stuffy critics out there!
'So I'll be letting go, goodbye and not hello' 10:14am on 03 Apr 2009 Hi Alys - it's always so much harder to say goodbye than saying hello but I'm really excited to see what Greenacres is like and what you'll be doing with it. As an amateur gardener watching Berryfields was beautiful but it always seemed way out of my league because it was already so mature and developed and I'm really hoping that Greenacres will address some of the basics that I'm so keen to learn! Good luck and I'm sure you'll have lots more wonderful memories still to come.

I totally understand Jo's obsession with snowdrops - I seek them out everywhere I go at the moment I think it must come from some primevil desire for Spring. Even in London there are plenty to see - I plan my route to the tube station around the best garden snowdrop displays!
Outgrowing my garden 3:42pm on 02 Feb 2009 Oh Alys I truly understand your back garden frustrations!! I have a garden about the same size as yours (well at least I think so from the Gardeners World episode I saw) which for a London garden is considered really big. But I'm so greedy because after getting lots of lovely books for xmas (yours included!) I want more!!! I've considered allotments but the lists are soooo long here that there's not much chance. You are intriguing me with your plans - I need to find some alternate land to grow on. Perhaps I should sneak into my neighbours gardens at night and secretly plant things...
Re potatoes I'm on my second year of growing my own and I'm totally addicted - I've got all irish varieties as you can't beat a lovely floury spud drowning in butter and they taste so much nicer! I'm just wondering though - can I grow them in the same spot I grew them in last year? I have onions in there at the mo but when they come out will it be ok? If not I'll be ploughing up more of my lawn to get more space....

I am feeling a bit bereft this weekend with GW last weekly episode and autumn coming to a close. What do you and the rest of the GW team do over the winter months? Do you still go to Berryfields every day?

I just wanted to say well done on your first broadcast. I was so pleased when you got the job and as a novice (but very keen) gardener I think the "back to basics approach" is a great idea! I have so many things still to learn!
I really like your style of presenting and I'm really looking forward to seeing how you make your mark on the programme.

Glad you had a good holiday. The things you saw sound really cool. I like the idea of people planting veg wherever there is a scap of land. We could do with more of that going on in London!

It must feel really cold now you're back! My tomatoes succumbed to blight while you were away (like the rest of the country it seems) and as my beans are over, my potatoes ready to come out my veg plot is looking a bit bare at the moment. Do you have any reccommendations of things I could plant out now for growing over the winter, (baring in mind that my veg plot is really quite small and I couldn't really fit in more than about 3-4 different things!)?
All suggestions very gratefully accepted!

I'd like to echo that last comment. Your garden almost made me cry it felt so real and natural and lovely. It was one of the most inspirational things I've seen on Gardener's World for ages. I'm a 34 and live in London and dream of becoming a gardener one day and if I even get a fraction of the happiness you seem to get from your job I think I'll be doing ok. You inspire me hugely - thank-you so much for showing us your garden!!
