Costly by-elections and surplus salaries 11:02am on 24 Jun 2009 Mark
Several members of the Labour Party take what is termed an average industrial wage and donate the remainder of their salary, for example the Trade Union movement. I think a Party already exists which uses the same principle --the Respect Party--founded by George Galloway.
"We haven't gone away, you know" 10:24am on 11 Jun 2009 I have to agree with Big Issue because this not just about petty politicians behaving like spoilt children. This image permeates down into society where communities and community activists who are still dealing with hard issues at interfaces. Unfortunately they too seem at times unable to simply shake hands. Is it long held sectarian views or are they reflecting our politicians? Perhaps its a bit of both but our politicians need to show some real leadership that will help re build shattered communities across NI.
Debates and Complaints 10:28am on 06 May 2009 I noted on another site that MEP's get £172.00 per day--well acutally just for turning up and signing in!(obviously plus expenses) Not bad at all. Not a bad income for Husband and wife political families!
The DUP bloc vote 12:44pm on 31 Mar 2009 'not the nine o'clock news' now that was a fantastic programme.

As for the voting, it is incredible that there can't even be a free vote on an isssue like climate change. This does not bode well for real decisions that need to be taken in the future. They may as well set up 'pairing' arrangements like the House of Commons and then we would only need one shinner and one Dup MLA to make all the decisions.

i visited St Pauls a few years ago and agree with your sentiments regarding the Chapel. I also agree with the idea of a place for recognition of victims of the troubles. It may not be easy picking such a place, however might I suggest the Crumlin Road Gaol. A place of incarceration for over 150 years which also happened to hold many of our well known political leaders over the years. It does have its own Chapel which was used by the main Christian faiths (whilst in Gaol), although I understand it is currently in a very poor state of repair.

Just a thought.

Barry painted into corner 12:07pm on 17 Feb 2009 Excellent value of tax payers money for an Ombudsman to spend his valuable time and resources on such an important issue for society-- with an overall salary of £165,272.26 for the 2008 year -- I wonder what the actual cost was for this frivolus complaint. That is only the ombudsman, he has of course a full team of staff. then there are the assembly staff putting together papers and arranging the neccessary meetings and the people responsible for putting all this on a website etc etc etc

Meanwhile in the real world jobs go down the pan.
