The continuing adventures of Andy Hessenthaler 03:56am on 02 Dec 2008 I was lucky enough to know Andy when he was top bob at Gillingham. He took a Soccer School near where I used to live and he was an excellent coach.

What this blog doesn't tell you is how commited Andy was when he was younger.

This tale is only what I've heard from the peers of my father as I am too young to be that age, but here it is:

Andy was playing near Gravesened in a old Bexley League game. Andy was not the nostable of players there at the time, but his committment to the game could not be matched. The side he was playing for included some local heroes so to speak so Andy was not the most sought after talent there.

The game belonged to the North West Kent side as they thrashed their newly Londonised opponents 3-0. The lads of the team were boyant to say the least . Virtually running out of the shower to the bar. But as they sat there drinking, and discussing the battle won, one happened to look out the window at the pitch...
There was Andy doing doggy sprints between the hyalfway line and the edge of the box. Some laughed at him, some tried to call hiom in, but he was focused and uncomprimising.

Andy Hessenthaler is a good example to any young player who feels he or she is falling behind. Andy went on to Captain Kent SChool Boys and Played for England School Boys before he was pulled into work because he was failing to earn his crust through football.

I'm pleased he is still regarged and thought of as a top manager and football personality.
Walcott and Capello stun Croatia 03:24am on 11 Sep 2008 What a fantastic display by England. I waited up all night in Western Australia for that. I don't mind have bags under my eyes, or lacking basic conversational and motor skills for a day, to bare witness to a display such as the one in question.

Walcott was brilliant, and i am pleased for him. As was Rooney, the Ox and thrust of everything we cost muster. and the great Emile. Still doing what he did those years ago against the Germans. Lampard was dare I say...good. As was Barry. Joe Cole was assaulted but before then a hero. Jenas made an impact, and can we take something from this game that we can replay onto the remaining qualifiers:

PACE IS ESSENTIAL AGAINST THESE TEAMS.

Well done England, it truely was worth a sleepless night.
Time for England to trust Joe Cole 05:31am on 09 Sep 2008 I agree that Cole is the man for the job against the Croats. His flare and ability are characteristicly un-english, which makes him so exciting to watch.

I don't feel sorry for Downing, because he is extremely one dimensional. He needs at least 5 yards of room to delivery properly and hasn't got the pace or dribbling attributes that you would assume a winger would have...attributes that J Cole has. Many defenders of Downing focus on his creative left foot, but in the past Downing has been ineffective in both EPL games and international matches, by being marked out of the game by athletic and determined full-backs.

Cole although being predominantly right footed, compliments the rest of the England midfield. If Beckham plays wide on the right, Cole is encouraged to hug the touchline and make runs from deep to recieve backham's long range passing. If he plays alongside Lampard, he is sharp enough with his feet to get 1-2's off lampard into dangerous areas in and around the box as he has done in the past for club and country.

The way that i interpreted FC's comments on Cole's role against Andorra was that he wasn't supporting Heskey. But Cole is clearly not a player who sells himself or plies his trade by latching onto flick ons or nod-downs from burly tall attackers.

Do what is right by Joe Cole, get the ball into his feet in the final 3rd and he will deliver. Am I the only one who believes Cole is one of, if not the best performer for england over the past 5 years?
