What did 2008 bring for Australia? 02:14am on 30 Dec 2008 The attitude of Freakontheguitar to Iguanagate is typical of many, but as for me, I just feel deeply ashamed that people are indulging in sneering laughter all over the world because some Australians behave so badly, Truly shaming, not funny.
What did 2008 bring for Australia? 02:12am on 30 Dec 2008 Speaking from a State perspective: Queensland began to recover from water problems, but we now have the sickening spectacle with the State election happening next year, of the Premier desperately backpedaling on 2 controversial issues (recycled water and the Traveston dam) simply in order to try and stay in power. Squillions of dollars have been spent on the recycled water project and associated pipelines to give SE Queensland what it really needs - a water grid - and now it is all being thrown away because Bligh needs to hang on to power. Wayne Goss cancelled dam projects to keep his government in control, but all that did (he lost to Borbridge)) was cause us to have a water crisis further down the track.

And then there's the electricity problem: we are plagued with little power cuts which are irritating rather than dangerous, but speak of an electricity infrastructure desperately underfunded. Engergex take out adverts urging us to buy torches and batteries as if catastrophic power failures were a natural event and not as a result of lack of investment by the politicians.
Baby P - It will happen again 10:29pm on 18 Nov 2008 The UK is not unique. Only yesterday three young men were sentenced in New Zealand (only to 10 years in jail) for the prolonged torture of a 3 year old which included putting her in a tumble drier and switching it on and hanging her on a clothes line. She died from being kicked in the head.

Is this just Western societies which treat small children in this way? What kind of societal values are we inculcating?
The stunted country 09:08am on 22 Oct 2008 Anna Bligh is encouraging all of us to work hard for Queensland and make it a better State: well, daylight saving would help - we would then be in the same time zone as the rest of the east for 6 months of the year and my husband would not have to spend 6 months of the year catching planes the evening before to get to an early start meeting in Melbourne, Sydney or Canberra.
And has anyone else in Brisbane noticed how QANTAS can't seem to keep to timetables? I think in the past 8 months or so, only a couple of planes caught by us have been on time.
Incidentally, when we last bought a new car (6 years ago), the garage assumed (rightly!) that we would *not* want a Smart State numberplate.
Missing memory amnesty 03:15am on 17 Sep 2008 I work part-time in an academic library. The duty librarian's top desk drawer *always* has at least one memory stick in it! We just hope the assignment(s) are not overdue......

The thrill of the cross-country chase 1:34pm on 11 Aug 2008 I have been rather disappointed by Lizzie's comments - the comments afterwards are often more enlightening! And who cares what her jeans look like or whether she is wearing makeup! We want to know about the horses and riders!
Eventing is the ultimate challenge for horse and rider: You have your horse trained up and fit and active and raring to go for the XC, BUT you first have to do dressage, which is all about control, obedience to the smallest aid and discipline: it's terribly difficult to get a balance so you don't have a horse "losing it" in the dressage phase, because he is pumped up for XC - which he has to be! And then the show jumping - horse and rider are tired after the cross country phase, but still have to be super-alert, responsive, controlled and careful. Amazingly complex sport, done by amazing people!
Milking it 11:16pm on 04 Aug 2008 When we lived in Reading in 1985/6, our milk bottle tops were pecked through, not by the delicate pinpricks of the tits and robins, but punched chisel-like by magpies who hung about the road like gangs of asboed teenagers waiting to attack milk bottles and garbage bags. The only solution was flower pots (nice environmentally friendly clay ones) over the bottles: the milkman swapped them from empty ones to full ones. Very few people use milk delivery here in sub-tropical Queensland as the milk goes off too quickly.
