Stanford inquests begin 04:39am on 21 Feb 2009 thefrogstar: nothing to do with class in an English sense, but class as in his behaviour. My point was that many people didn't trust his motives and didn't enjoy his crass antics, but were labelled as overly conservative or elitist. I would hope that English cricket pays more attention to those opinions in future.

Anyway, not going to bore everyone else any further with this little tiff.

We spend enough time complaining about the yobs, and we have every right to comment on a game we love. Every country in the world has problems (incl India by the way, I was there recently) so by your logic no sports fan anywhere has the right to comment on any sport. And you have the nerve to call us 'hypocrites'? What a joke.

27. thefrogstar: Yes, I was in a rush and made a couple of typos. As do many people on here including you. I thought we were talking about cricket? The 'grammar' handle was a joke with a friend, I'm not claiming to be a schoolteacher. Perhaps we can stick to addressing the logic of our respective arguments.
Stanford parade raises serious concerns 2:00pm on 31 Oct 2008 As some have pointed out on other blogs, there is a cultural difference here and 'local' supporters will doubtless have a more favourable view of Stanford and his overbearing ego.

But that doesn't mean that we can't raise our concerns, as I have always loved cricket and feel that it has a special ethos and standard of conduct which should be protected. I enjoyed some of the IPL (although too much 20/20 can diminish the excitement and it lacks the intricacies of the longer forms), but had to turn this mess off after a brief viewing dominated by Stanford meeting and greeting.

I'm probably in the target demographic for this sort of thing, but I think we're in danger of cricket splitting into two sports, with different skills and standards, like rugby did when league and union split. Perhaps this would be no bad thing, but it's hard to predict all the consequences now.

I would have thought that Stanford would try to appeal to traditional as well as 'new' supporters of cricket, but his antics suggest otherwise.

"We play cricket differently over here". Indeed. All the best to the Windies in the future anyway, and I hope they put his money to good use in the sport.
ECB should be wary of Stanford Series 6:25pm on 30 Oct 2008 I thought this tournament would be an embarrassing farce, but it's even worse than expected. The sordid spectacle is an absolute disgrace, and it's actually putting me off the whole England cricket setup - one of the reasons they're worried about the coverage I suppose.

The man has no class, manners or respect for the game, and in the 30 minutes of coverage I managed to sit through on sky I became quite sick of the sight of him. Who needs their own cameraman when they're not involved in the game? What sort of egotist goes around 'meeting and greeting' (on camera) as if they're royalty or a world leader? Is this really the future of cricket? Give me the IPL ahead of this any day, and that's coming from a lover of test cricket.

I realise that "Trini66" and other locals appreciate what he's done for the region, to the point of suggesting a pregnant woman "decided" to sit on his lap. Fair enough, they're entitled to their opinion. But we should steer well clear and keep that helicopter away from Lord in future.

Although my parents are English I spent part of my childhood in South Africa. Let's just say the approach to winning/competing was very different, more in line with Australia or the US I'd guess.

Competitive sport was encouraged from a young age. I showed some aptitude for swimming when I started school (admittedly easier in a country where swimming pools are more common), and was soon training in a 50m pool (in our small town), coached by an ex-SA swimmer. Even those who had no aptitude for swimming enjoyed it and took part.

Those who weren't much good at rugby, for example (not the easiest against teams of huge Afrikaners!), just tried other sports like squash, hockey, waterpolo, golf - ultimately most people found something they were either reasonably good at or enjoyed.

When I moved back to the UK I was shocked by the attitude to sport here. Even where facilities are scarce, as in central London, the preference for silly games where noone loses surely doesn't make the best use of what facilities there are.

As johnlennonlives implies, life consists of winning and losing. Why have to learn that in your 20s? Why not give our feral teenagers something else to focus on rather than finding competitive outlets in consumerism, gangs and knives?

Move over Murray, these Games ain't for you 2:43pm on 12 Aug 2008 #286 - bighullabaloo, not at all, I meant that two countries with missiles pointed at each other, no direct flights until recently and no diplomatic relations sometimes seem to have a better relationship than England and Scotland.

Please don't mention things like 'master race' - really, really unnecessary and could easily be misinterpreted by any foreign readers. Thanks.
Food for thought 2:38pm on 12 Aug 2008 As many posters have suggested, this article is not aimed at the hosts who are doing a great job, but the IOC who control these matters. The likes of Coca Cola et al pay $100m or so, and then have exclusive rights to sell their products in the games. It will be the same in 2012.

And it's not just the Olympics. Remember the 2006 football World Cup where the only beer allowed in the German stadia was Budweiser? The Germans with their centuries-old purity laws and brewing traditions loved that one!
