What is the point of the rugby league World Cup? 1:55pm on 25 Oct 2008 Number 80. I'm not sure if this is correct but I thought Rugby League has only been played full time professionally since 1996 when Super League began. Up until then I thought players were part time and had other jobs? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, it might only be the case for certain teams, but that would make it 12 years- 1 year less than Union been played full time professionally. Wouldn't part time teams be classed as semi-professional?

Number 85, Australia will never win the football World Cup, definetly not any time soon. New Zealand won't even qualify. Therefore Rugby League stands a much bigger chance of becoming even more popular. Football doesn't(if we go by your argument). Also I think RL fans choose to watch their sport instead of football because they get value for money. They can see players smashing into eachother, busting their heads open with blood spurting everywhere and the game won't stop. The players just get on with it and keep throwing themselves into the action... I think everyone would agree with the contrast of football players, so much as sneeze near one and they get carried off on a stretcher, thus prolonging the boredom even longer.
Number 84- sorry no. Leeds Rhinos are the best supported Rugby Team of either code in the U.K. At times I've been to Headingley and the crowd as surpassed 22,000, pushing 23000 on many occasions. I went to Uni in Leicester, I went to several matches and I can't remember the crowd been over 13000 at any time.- Besides, the capacity of Welford Road isn't even 18,000, Headingley is around 22 and a half Thousand. So you can argue against it, but it would be impossible for the Tigers to pull a bigger crowd. Simple as.

Also viewing figures for Rugby League showed over 50% were from the South last year.

What is the point of the rugby league World Cup? 1:24pm on 23 Oct 2008 I think it's going to be a really good tournament, but how far it can become an advert for the sport is another matter. It's obvious there is going to be a buzz in Australia, rugby is arguably the National sport over there and League is every bit as popular as rugby union, I somehow doubt the stadiums will be hard to fill. But in England it simply isn't receiving enough coverage and attention to be taken seriously, despite a genuine chance of England winning! All the matches are been shown on Sky Sports for example, yes there will be highlights on the Super League show on BBC 2 but even then that's going to be in the North of England! Anyone else think that that's minimum coverage?
Yes the Nation can constantly hear about the England cricket team winning the Ashes for the first time for 500 years or a Scottish tennis player reaching the final of a minor tennis tournament in America or some other far away land but God forbid Rugby League becomes succesful and popular.
The only time the Nation hears about Rugby League is when one of the code's top stars moves to a Rugby Union squad. The fact they used to play League is always used as an excuse to slate them afterwards if they fail to adapt. It's a das state of affairs but it's the way it is.
At least we can all look forward to that bit on the sport news when the reporter says "and finally" with a smile on their face and we see a brief 30 second snippet of Jamie Peacock lifting the World Cup and a couple of tries. (That is if we win). That and a small paragraph on the fourth from last page of "The Sun" is what will be said, and that's it, that's the Rugby League World Cup over with.
Hope I'm proved wrong.
Final emotions tell the story of Leeds' grand victory 5:44pm on 05 Oct 2008 I never had a doubt that Leeds stood a chance last night. Saints are second best in every respect. Yes they're an awesome team, but I don't like it when people don't acknowledge that when the Rhinos bring their A game and play to their best, they're simply unstoppable, not even Saints- who I believe threw everything they had at Leeds can beat them.
Why on earth the defending CHAMPIONS(ie. best team in the League) were written off and seen as "underdogs" I will not know.
In my opinion Leeds suprised nobody last night.
Didn't the same thing happen last season too? Everybody favoured Saints, then Leeds ran rings round them. Strange how nobody learns their lesson.
I can see the same thing happening next season, Leeds Saints Grand Final and despite Leeds been back to back champions and probably still World Club Champions, everyone will probably favour Saints. How daft.
It's all very silly and annoying! A bit like this post really, but I'm hungover after quite a night out in Leeds to celebrate. Because who won? Oh yes, LEEDS!
The philosophical argument of the Tevez saga 1:44pm on 02 Oct 2008 Any Super League Rugby League fans on here? This season Hull F.C fielded an ineligible player, Jamie Thackary in the Challenge cup tournament- arguably Rugby League's most prestigious trophy. He scored vital tries in at least two rounds of the competition that contributed to Hull winning those games.
Hull went on to play him in the knock-out stages and even went on to reach the final- where they played him. Was there any complaints from the teams who were knocked out by Hull at this stage? These included Bradford- a high profile team whose views could potentially be influential. No- because Hull were punished accordingly through a fine beforehand. They took their punishment, paid the price of cheating, and thus were allowed to carry on playing Thackary and on with their own business as usual. A bit like West Ham- okay the outcome- relegation, loss of money etc are different, but it's essentially the same sort of case. So why can't Sheffiled Utd just accept that? If they think they have the right to compensation, pursue this from the FA. As others have rightly pointed out, teams such as Charlton and Watford have just as much right to complain and launch an appeal, but their actions take place where it matters, on the pitch.
Football is a sport played by full time professionals, there should be no room for cry babies.
The philosophical argument of the Tevez saga 8:46pm on 01 Oct 2008 Fair enough Kasbah, I remember other teams backing Sheffield UTD and speaking out at the affair, but where do you draw the line? Why do one team think they have the right over everybody else to claim £30 million? Surely other teams could have a case too, what is stopping certain teams claiming West Ham cost them a Uefa cup spot or even Champions League sopt for example.
Maybe they should be punished further through a hefty fine, but I don't think the Blades should see a penny.

The philosophical argument of the Tevez saga 7:46pm on 01 Oct 2008 Plexico, if Sheffield Utd had stayed up and not been relegated we wouldn't be hearing about this. Funny how they only complained once Wigan had relegated them and they realised they might have some sort of case and/or excuse. They never mentioned anything atall of the affair before it had effected them.
West Ham were fined- they were punished- end of. Think it's a case of sour grapes and bitterness tbh. Tevez doesn't even play for them anymore it's been that long!! And would Sheffield Utd be still going on about it if they had been promoted last season? Probably not.
They're a poor team anyway, West Ham at least bring some sort of class to the EPL.

For a while Saints were not the same team without him playing.
Even though I'm a Leeds supporter I hope Paul Sculthorpe can still be an asset to Saints and Rugby League and keep inspiring younger generation players to be as awesome as he was. I Wish him all the best for the future.
