Goodbye "Knock-off Nigel" 11:51am on 02 Apr 2009 The anti-piracy adverts, and being forced to watch them even if you've never pirated anything are grossly offensive, as are "un-skippable" adverts.

Whenever I watch a DVD with either feature, I keep thinking to myself "next time I should buy a pirate copy myself, just to put one over on these idiots".

Not done it yet, but then I don't watch many DVD movies. The temptation is growing though.
Ethical Man is reborn 4:57pm on 16 Feb 2009 There is only one solution to Climate Change, and it's the one no-one's willing to talk about. People need to stop having babies. We need to get the global population down, and the only ethical way to do that is to get vast numbers of people all across the world to decide not to have children.

Anything else really is just papering over the cracks.

Btw, why are you flying to the US? Book passage on a container ship, most of them carry small numbers of passengers, and the crossing doesn't take that long.
Caption Competition 11:15am on 13 Feb 2009 You know, this white stuff is fun, but we should charge royalties, payable in fresh meat, for being in their caption competition.
Do green targets miss the point? 12:17pm on 18 Dec 2008 The various environmental targets that governments set are completely pointless, and will all be missed by a wide margin. Achieving any kind of significant change would require a dramatic drop in lifestyles, which, as the recent Manchester Congestion Charge vote proves, people are simply not going to vote for.

The problem will correct itself in a few hundred years, as the ice caps melt, sea levels rise, and the ever expanding human population starts fighting wars, eventually nuclear wars, over access to food and fresh water.

The planet and its ecosystems will survive and evolve to cope. But human civilisation will be brought crashing down in ruin, and most of the human population will die with it.
Less money, less art? 4:02pm on 10 Dec 2008 The government should fund the training of talented people in painting "proper" pictures, landscapes, portraits, street scenes, etc. Art that ordinary people can look at, like, enjoy, and buy to hang in our houses. This would benefit artists and non-artists alike.
A distant climate 4:34pm on 08 Dec 2008 Poland isn't that far away - why aren't you going by train? Eurostar across the channel, overnight across Germany, easy.

For some trips, especially ones that cross oceans, flying is necessary. But for many others it's just convenient, or worse, just habbit.

Go overland instead. You'll meet far more people, see far more of the place your going to, and anjoy an altogether more civilised way to travel.
BBC on a bus and box road trip 7:49pm on 12 Sep 2008 The container didn't go to Scotland by ship, but by land (probably road) transport. It's on a ship now though.
The war on drugs 1:00pm on 30 Jul 2008 Prohibition will never work in any kind of democratic society where individuals have rights and freedoms.

It would in theory be possible to eradicate drugs if customs and excise were given the power to summarily execute anyone caught bringing drugs into the country, coupled with unannounced random searches of houses and individuals, execution of anyone convicted of dealing in drugs, and similar extreme police-state policies. We'd probably need 40% basic income tax to pay for it all, though.

On the other hand, if all drugs were legalised, the country as a whole would receive a massive boost in tax revenues, dangerous impure drugs would be removed from the supply chain, prices would drop, drugs would be de-glamorised, and a huge sector of organised crime would be wiped out overnight.

All the policing resources freed up could be re-deployed to tackle other crime, which should have a knock-on effect of greatly reducing crime in general.

But modern politicians don't lead with bold initiatives that actually make changes any more, they just react to opinion polls and events as they unfold. So we're likely to be stuck with the current situation for many years to come.
