Can Brown stay silent? 2:07pm on 24 Aug 2009 Brown is doing the right thing by refusing to comment on a decision he had no authority to influence. The decision was taken in accordance with the law. It was taken from a judicial perspective unlike the decision to release all terrorists involved in "The Troubles", who between them murdered far more people and caused much more harm to their communities, which was made up as we went along.

It must be hard to get past something like that if you do the job professionally, Tony BLiar would presumably be up to the required standard.

I prefer integrity and honesty to polished disingenuity.

Leave it out dean, we have already established you weren't born at the time. Personally, I would have been happy to throw away the key as would most people in the area. I was in Lockerbie this morning and there was a general feeling of disgust not at MacAskill, but the ones trying to play petty politics over the issue. It's never easy when old wounds are opened like this, but it's not helped by faux indignation and anger.

I agree with you, but this just proves MacAskill acted correctly as Justice Secretary in accordance with due process and did not allow politics to interfere with the decision, which would have been illegal. I can understand you're confusion as it is extremely rare for a politician in such a position to act with integrity, certainly not what we have come to expect over the last decade.

All serious politicians will support the decision, they know it was done for the right reasons with no personal or party political agenda. To then challenge the decision along party political lines will only damage the instigators. Grey will be told to behave, Goldie won't get drawn in and the LibDems will do as they always do by offering lots of critcism but no actions or ideas.

Some things struck me watching the footage again. That was actually a remarkably low key reception compared to what would normally take place with only a couple of hundred people at the airport. What sort of reception would a high profile prisoner being released from a Libyan jail get here? Probably about the same the one Megrahi got. Don't know where the saltires came from but it's not exactly hard to buy them or even make them at short notice. I would be very unhappy if the embassy staff had supplied them.

Grey would try to avoid fresh elections, but would need Conservative support to form a government. Goldie isn't silly and will realise this would damage her credibility and set the Tories back. The last thing His Masters Voice wished would be fresh Scottish elections, he's desperately fighting for survival and that could be the nail in the coffin. But will CMD want to be facing a rejuvinated Labour Party under a new leader with none of the baggage, that's ultimately what will decide the Scots Tories actions.

That's what happens to a coalition when the party hierarchy start dictating policy instead the constiuent parts. Just look back to the way Thatcher dictated Conservative policy and allowed no dissent, to see what the future has in store for The Labour Party. Substitute Blair for Thatcher and Brown for Major. Will the Co-operative Party be the socialist version of UKIP?

You really should think about your posts more.

I'm sure you meant to say all suspects get a trial

Or is it only the convicts that get a trial? What about the innocent? Are they just incarcerated until they admit guilt and are then brought to trial? Surely everyone is entitled to a trial with innocence being presumed until found guilty at which point they become convicts. That may well be a debatable point judging by past and current actions of certain American organisations.

There may be no urgency or immediate need to hold an Inquiry, nor is there an impediment. If the Scottish government did set one up that would be purely party political posturing as it would need the co-operation of the UK government. So the UK government needs to instigate it, but with Milliband issuing the Public Interest Immunity certificate covering the witheld evidence, there is absolutely no chance of this occurring.

What will be Greys' line of attack tomorrow? The only one open to him is "I would have done things differently" any other line of attack will be vetoed by London. There's a lot of bear traps in that argument so he's going to have to be very careful and long on rhetoric, but short on facts. I doubt this would be enough to force MacAskills resignation, never mind the governments.
