It now appears that the whole Palin idea was dreamt up by a 20-year old student with a website - which a few commentators fell for, then Rush Limbaugh fell for, and then John McCain fell for.

The pick only proves two things. Firstly, the power of the web and secondly the vacuity of McCain.

I don't believe that the fabled GOP machine can big this one up. Too many heavy hitters must feel slapped in the face and too many states needing a bit of tlc must be feeling excluded.

It's politics - but not as we know it.

A clever performance 7:45pm on 29 Aug 2008 The body language between McCain and Palin is excrutiating. They both look deeply uncomfortable.

Makes you wonder just what rows there are behind this pick - and wouldn't ANY of the experienced pols, man or woman, Governor of Senator, agree to stand as McCain's VP ?

There also seems to be a lack of hooha from GOP HQ. Have they all given up ?

Don't worry. I have come to the conclusion that Marcus Aurelius is actually one of the moderators who comes in if we are all getting too positive in our reactions. Ginger us up a little bit maybe - insult a whole continent, express "Greed is Good" and hopefully start a few more wars and tread over a few more victims.

He can't be real for sure - or do such views really exist in the eighth year of the twenty first century ?

Someone should come clean.

Who was the first one to sound off against Russia (with a paid consultant to the impressionable Georgian President on his own staff) ?

Sometimes your comments are not worthy of response (see Stock Market, above) but there are other times when you should not be allowed to get away with your nonsense.

In 'bringing if off' Obama used a technique which I haven't seen before in political speeches - certainly not ones given before a full crowd in a stadium of that size but then I haven't seen too many like that anyway.

As well as his seamless mingling of use of the teleprompters with speaking to the crowd, he managed to look full into camera as well. Thus the viewer felt included in the speech - in the way that might be expected in a fireside chat.

I don't know how he did this because the cameras seemed to be about a million miles away - I am sure some techie can explain but he achieved it seamlessly. The man really is very smart.

I too remember being slightly surprised when BBC commentators came out so decisively for McCain. The BBC is meant to be non-partisan (and is funded by the British licence payer) and the outright McCain support was surprising to many of us - especially as there was a truly fascinating story developing around the unexpected Obama phenomenon. The Brits did not want Obama to be belittled by their commentators before we saw what he could do and what he had to say.

I came to the conclusion that this bias was due to McCain's well-known accessibility and his willing to yakyak to the press both homegrown and overseas. I believe that McCain was rare amongst US politicians in his habit of hobnobbing with the press.

It is an amusing factor of this campaign that the minders clamped down firmly on this accessibility and we now have a rather wooden figure spouting platitudes, drilled into him by the backroom boys.

Only Justin can explain to us if this is so.

Whatever the naysayers may feel, one's overwhelming feeling watching him on the podium is that he's been given an extraordinary, once-in-a-generation talent as a politician and that he has made the decision that he is prepared to put it to the use of America.
Denver diary 08:26am on 28 Aug 2008 Two comments on your 'Today' pice this morning :

1. You never mentioned John Kerry's speech. It was an extraordinarily good speech and interesting because he has unfinished business with the GOP.

2. You said - in rather indulgent tones - that John McCain is doing very well. He's still upright but his place in the polls seems to be due entirely to some really slimy negative ads. As you've taken the trouble to go all the way to Denver, could we have a little investigative journalism ?
Joe Biden's speech - live 07:51am on 28 Aug 2008 Biden was good - and in fluffing his words a few times he came across as human but not a threat to Obama's presidential speaking skills.

I urge all readers to watch John Kerry's speech. He came on alive - yes, really !
