Loving Sandra Bullock 11:32am on 24 Jul 2009 I've thought for years someone needs to set up the CFDRSB the Campaign to Find Decent Roles for Sandra Bullock because she certainly doesn't seem to be able to do it herself.
A European Obama? 11:17am on 13 Nov 2008 Well, one interesting thing about the US primary system is the ability of someone like Obama to appeal directly to the electorate over the heads of his own party. That kind of rapid rise to prominence from relative obscurity is much harder in a parliamentary system. I don't know enough about the rest of Europe, but in the UK we can say with almost certainty that we already know who the party leaders at the next election will be, so that's the next six or seven years accounted for. And since whichever party loses the next election is likely to hold a leadership election very soon afterwards, the next leader is likely to be someone who is already a senior figure on the party (i.e. almost certainly white), so that probably accounts for another four or five years as well, taking us up to about 2020...

Obviously the further forward into the future you try to predict the more uncertain it gets, but I'm not about to hold my breath.

Returning to the fray from Europe 10:36am on 27 Jul 2008 I've never really understood the need for a 'head of state', whether monarch or president. Surely we'd get along perfectly well without someone to magically embody our country like some kind of oversized voodoo doll.
