Dramatic athletics - but Britain beware 7:02pm on 24 Aug 2008 I think that calling our Olympic team TeamGB just about sums up what is wrong with British athletics. It is run by advertising people who think that image is more important than performance. What's wrong with being called Great Britain? I didn't hear the USA team being called TeamUSA and they are experts in the banal. Lets get back to what's important, sweep away the image mongers, numerous coaches and under performers. Learn some lessons from cycling, rowing and sailing before its too late. Have centers of excellence where top coaches can train the top athletes. If you want funding then you have to train there. Hopefully then we can win a bucket full of track and field medals in 2012 !
It's my final countdown 8:13pm on 17 Aug 2008 Good words Dave but what happened ? A bit of the pot calling the kettle don't you think. Why were you tired or just a bit to relaxed ? Michael Phelps could rightly say he was tired after winning 8 gold medels but not someone who disappointed in a final. Hopefully redemption will come from the 10km - good luck.
It's the winning, not the taking part that counts 7:21pm on 16 Aug 2008 It isn't the winning but the taking part and trying your absolute best that counts. I don't care what position a British sportsperson comes as long as they strive to beat their personnel best. Too many have shrugged their shoulders and said 'I am better than that performance or I just couldn't do it today'. This is the Olympic games and if you cannot raise your game here when will you ! The difference between winners and the rest is that winners always raise their game when it matters most.

Just another point I didn't like Gabby Logan's comments about not caring who came second because they were not British. Everyone needs to be gracious when we win which gladly the majority of the competitors are (Greco Roman Wrestler excluded )
Brits solid but unsatisfied at Grand Prix 6:13pm on 27 Jul 2008 Sorry danilosilva I meant that there were 300 or so UK altheletes and the point is that they are outnumbered by BBC personnel.

Whereas we can decide whether to watch ITV or Sky or buy the goods from the companies who fund them we cannot do the same with the BBC. We are taxed to watch TV. As such I would like them to provide value for money and spend my money more wisely. Having numerous BBC commentators, summarizers, interviewers, news reporters etc etc on a junket to the Olympics seems a massive waste of money to me. They could as easily be based in the UK as they only ever watch replays of the action anyway.

I remember during the World Cup in Germany a BBC sports reporter was summing up the action at Wimbledon from Munich. Why not the other way around ?

I am a license fee payer and I resent my hard earned money being spend on a juncket for mass ranks of BBC staff. They could equally do what they do if they stayed in the UK. I am sure they could still provide 'a fantastic service'. Why do you need to be in the stadium or even in the same country to provide so call expert analysis ? All they ever do is look at the TV replays anyway !

You might have noticed at the recent European football championships the BBC had 6 or 7 people at each match whereas ITV had two commentators and all the analysis was done in a studio in the UK.

Why can't the BBC do the same and save some money for real investigative journalism
Brits solid but unsatisfied at Grand Prix 6:00pm on 26 Jul 2008 If you want something to complain about you should ask why it takes >420 BBC personnel to cover the Olympics when there are only 320 or so athletes.

Gravy train or what? Its it good to know the license fee is well spent.

Why do they need two commentators, at least two wittering on in the stand and another one on the field asking banal questions !!

It was the same with football and no British team qualified. Most of the 'analysis' could be done in the UK and save the club class flights and posh hotels.

About time they made the BBC pay its own way.
