Well observed, that smile, the clunking fist, a dash of class war, and the Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition distinctly uncomfortable. But Labour needs to be careful as I have opined here:

They didn't choose to go to Eton. They were just born(e) to it. Before we know it they will be seeking public sympathy.

Thanks for further evidence of why Peter Mandelson's new boss should be looking across the pond to the eye-watering success of Barack Obama's fundraising campaign.

Forget wealthy, high-profile, high-risk of adverse publicity donors. Forget state-funding of political parties. Bring on the small donations.

All Labour members and supporters will ask in return is a say in Labour policy-making as evidenced in the LabOUR Commission report (2007)

Cameron's economic problem 10:07am on 20 Oct 2008 Dear Nick

Just as the markets appear to be calming down and the banking system is possibly, albeit very slowly, rediscovering its true vocation - to attract deposits and lend prudently, so politics is returning to normal - the next British general election remains there for the government to lose.

If Labour mismanages the recession, the Conservatives have to do nothing more than avoid looking less competent.

Saving the banking system from its own folly will not of itself deliver a 4th term.

OK, a sense of humour is good in times of crisis. But rather than goad the government about more nationalisation, perhaps a closer look at senior executive service contracts is needed to tackle the root causes of corporate greed.

While Sir Gred Goodwin may have foregone his severance entitlements, there is a hell of a tail on this one not just in the private sector, but throughout the higher echelons of most of UK government (national, regional and local) as well as business.

Performance management is rarely welcomed by those in charge of anything.

Small correction - there is a mechanism for Labour Party members to indicate approval or disapproval of the Leader/Deputy Leader set out in the Party's Rule Book. Party officials have chosen not to circulate the nomination papers to CLPs since 1996.

This has seriously weakened accountability of Labour in Government to its members - and the consequences in terms of declining membership, activism and loss of electoral support are all too apparant.
