Wind is an unstable, secondary source of power
It causes visual and sound pollution all of it's own
Tidal is better,
Stable and predictable to the minute but there maybe problems caused by changing flows (See the impact of sea defenses on coastal erosion along the coast)
Solar the source of all our non-nuclear power ..
New Building regs all houses must have solar roofs. Production volume of Solar Panels soars, prices fall.
Maybe not grand enough for the politicians?
The Canary Islands .. European, bright, sunny, barren for the most part. Why not cover them in Photo-Voltaic arrays and pipe the output to the Euro Grid? Instead of Cash aid to sub-Saharan Africa PV Arrays enable them to become exporters of the oil of the future

Problems like people dying of cancers brought on by secondary smoking, people being killed by drunken driver and drunken yobs do you mean Jan?

The Nutt case is about the Governments refusal to recognise the risks of harm from drugs and specifically about their refusal to include alcohol and tobacco (or caffine for that matter)to be included in the same harm scale. It is equivalent to leaving enemy action out of a list of risks to British soldiers!

We know how dangerous fags and booze are so why not a comparison between the risk to health from drinking 4 pints a night for 20 years v smoking 4 joints a day for the same period ?

Even the risk of using 'clean' heroin for 20 years v smoking 20 fags a day ........

Life in the fast lane 2:04pm on 30 Apr 2009 Glad to see you using the word 'pace' not speed.. I was fast sub 11 sec 100m on grass ... but there were always guys with more 'pace' than me. It isn't just about blindingly fast running it has more to do with acceleration and change of direction which enabled them to give me the slip and make them vastly better soccer players than I could ever hope to be... I switched to rugby where I could use my speed to catch someone from behind and knock them to the ground to stop them legaly!

The horse rider is given guidelines and safety standards for their equipment. The drug mis-user is not.

If the supply of 'recreational' drugs beyond alcoholand nicotine was legalised it too would become open to simmilar guidelines, standards of quality etc

In that circumstance it would be possible that the number of serious untoward events associated with ecstacy might turn out to be far lower than for equestrian sports.

This type of comparison needs to be made more frequently. To much policy has no evidence or the evidence is pushed into the wrong shape by applying 'scenarios' as with the 'Dodgy Dossier'. Other times the risk alone is used to justify actions as in eating at the wheel increase your risk of an accident by 25% ..... from (I am guessing the figures) 1 every 100 000 miles to 1 every 80 000 miles

That is 80 000 driven with a banana in your hand ..pitiful isn't it how our political masters feed rubbish statics to the media so as to whip up hype to support their quest for power over us mortals.

Proud 2:55pm on 06 Nov 2008 I congratulate you and all Americans that your democracy worked and was seen working by the whole world.

However as a Briton I did not need the indepth coverage .. I did not have a vote to change, quite rightly!

I did not need the saturation coverage of the result with it's very racist interpretation. The best candidate won .. voted for by millions of Whites, Hispanics and Asians so why show it as a solely black event?

Thirdly I am British and generally proud of being so but I am not "always proud" to be so .. My fellow citzens and my government make me wish I wasn't with alarming regularity ... That certainy about "always proud to be an American" is something that scares me about so many Americans and American leadership of the free world. The scences of thousands chanting USA USA at those final McCain rallies sound like the Red Guard chanting Ho Ho Hochi Min......
Map of the week: Economically inactive - other 1:04pm on 22 Sep 2008 What does amuse/concern/irritate me about politics so often is the obscene amount of time effort and money spent trying to buy votes of these 8 million people. (4.1 x 2 minus a few)

Don't our political masters recognise they are in general a low turn out group?
That they fit into other groups, Car owners? High wage earners? Holiday takers?

If they stopped this investment in depriving children of parental contact time and reduced the taxes to allow more parents to bring up their children we might not have the problems with "Yoof" we see today.
